Job Overview:
The Mental Health Screener responds to the emotional needs of those requesting assistance through screening, assessment, crisis intervention, referral and outreach. The Mental Health Screener will conduct evaluations at an offsite location serving as an extension of the screening center. This alternative will be available for those seeking care in a therapeutic, less restrictive, community setting,
The focus will be on early intervention and hospital diversion and will serve both youth and adults who are experiencing a crisis that does not reach a level that would warrant an emergency room/hospital crisis visit.
Qualifications:
- A master's degree in social work, psychology, or related clinical field required
- Certified New Jersey Mental Health Screener or immediately eligible with six months of hire required
- Two years' experience in a mental health setting, preferably in crisis intervention/emergency services

Essential Functions:
- Answers phones, i.e., hotline, business line, in a professional and timely manner
- Demonstrates ability to communicate clinical information effectively with the screening psychiatrist or child psychiatrist
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with other members of the health care team (internal and external)
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with the Screening RN in Charge of Shift as pertains to the patient’s treatment plan and disposition
- Demonstrates ability to conduct a thorough ongoing assessment according to departmental guidelines
- Demonstrates ability to effectively provide patient care in a timely manner
- Evaluates effects of interventions throughout the patient's stay and updates the plan of care as per hospital policy.
- Documentation indicates thorough completion of the request for off-site screening evaluation.
- Documentation indicates that the patient/family were provided with information based on the Discharge Plan/Teaching Checklist.
- Provides hotline information/referral/interventions that conform to screening guidelines
- Screening Assessment indicates determination of the most appropriate services/ disposition according to the patient’s clinical needs (consideration of the least restrictive alternatives).
- The screening document reflects a clear description of the patient’s mental illness as per Screening Law and guidelines from DMHS Certification training.
