Job Overview:

Provides pastoral care, emotional and spiritual support, to patients in the hospital and coordinates care with the patients, clergy and congregation as appropriate

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
  • At least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education
  • Candidate must be Board Certified as a Chaplain or eligible for Board Certification
  • Excellent communication and pastoral skills
  • high degree of emotional energy and mental alertness
  • Ability to deal with stress of ministering to patients and loved ones who experience pain, suffering, death and grief. Demonstrates organizational and decision making skills

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Day Shift
  • Rotating weekends and holidays
  • Full-Time

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure appropriate pastoral care provided for requests from assigned patients
  • Encourages a multi-faith ministry and a stance of cultural humility while caring for patients
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development over the lifespan and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served
  • Accesses data reflective of each patient's status and interprets information needed in order to identify each patient's age, faith group and cultural requirements relative to his/her specific health care needs
  • Makes daily rounds visiting patients
  • Provides pastoral care to families
  • See patients as part of a family system and cares for the whole unit as needed
  • Provides pastoral care to hospital staff and/or physicians as follows:
    • Helps staff debrief after critical incidents
    • Provides supportive care to staff as needed
    • In-service with staff regarding patient care
    • Helps staff understand spiritual perspectives on patient care
    • Interprets work of the chaplain to new staff
  • Documents information in the electronic charting system
  • Documents department statistics electronically
  • Provides support via training and visitation assignments for Pastoral Care and Eucharistic Minister volunteers supporting the department
  • Coordinates with visiting Catholic priest to ensure sacramental support is provided as needed
