The Lead Perfusionist works under the direction of the Chief Perfusionist. The Lead Perfusionist has management responsibilities including, staff management, budget creation, inventory management, scheduling and adherence to all federal, state and JCAHO requirements for perfusion services. The Lead Perfusionisist will develop a program for quality assurance and performance improvement. The Lead Perfusionist will maintain education and competency levels and records for the perfusion staff. Clinically, like any other perfusionist, the Lead Perfusionist must maintain adequate circulatory and respiratory support during open heart surgery. This support includes: set-up and operation of the extra-corporeal circuit, set-up and calibration of physiological monitoring as required for the conduct of perfusion, set-up and operation of autotransfusion equipment, calibration and operation of point of care testing equipment, as well as, maintaining proper perfusion records. The perfusionist is responsible for the set-up and operation of advanced life support systems including: intra-aortic balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, adult ECMO, and cardiac laser technologies. The perfusionist is also required to be competent to scrub and utilize the blower/mister. Additionally, the Lead Perfusionist must insure that the [unit/department/division] is in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations.


The Lead Perfusionist must be a graduate from a Council on Allied Health Education Administration approved perfusion training program and be certified by the American board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. The Lead Perfusionist must successfully complete all orientation programs. The Lead Perfusionist must hold a valid license for the practice of perfusion in the state of New Jersey.
