Job Summary:

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) is an equal member of the intensive care team. The primary responsibility is management of critically ill adult patients in a multidisciplinary, teaching intensive care unit. The APP is under the direct supervision of a critical care board-certified, full-time Intensivist. The APP also practices shoulder to shoulder with Critical Care fellows and physician residents from various specialties and when appropriate would be expected to supervise same. This position is for rotating shifts, the ICU is covered 24/7 by APP team.

Essential Functions:

  • Obtains and records patient history
  • Adequately manages patient flow in the ICU
  • Completes diagnostic and therapeutic studies
  • Completes charting in a thorough and timely manner
  • Performs physical and medical screening examinations
  • Works within legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standards
  • Actively participates in department staff meetings and risk management education
  • Orders diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies or other therapies as appropriate
  • Establishes diagnostic decision-making and initiates a treatment plan, which may include ordering medications, additional therapeutic modalities, etc.
  • Coordinates patient care with other members of the health care team. Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient management
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding mental and physical health, referring patients to appropriate specialists/resources
  • Performs procedures as allowed by state law and under the direction of the supervising or collaborating physician
  • Completes required courses, i.e. HIPAA, EMTALA and other CME/CEU requirements
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to academic lectures and / or quality improvement projects

Job Requirements:

  • Physician Assistant Certification
  • Registration & Licensure by the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners/ Physician Assistant Advisory required
    • OR
  • Master s degree in Nursing
  • NP Certification
  • Registered Professional Nurse with current NJ state license; CDS and DEA
  • Prior work experience as a professional nurse
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Certifications, PALS (if required)
  • Active membership in a professional organization preferred
  • Ability and willingness accommodate scheduling needs including working extended hours, weekdays, overnights, weekends, and holidays

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent time management skills
  • Recommended adult critical care experience
  • Medical and broad-based clinical emergency medicine knowledge
  • Experience with procedures and point of care ultrasound is desired
  • Ability to effectively and successfully work with all ICU and hospital employees
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Organizational ability, management, leadership and teaching skills
