The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Summary of Job Function:

  • Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Neurology team
  • This APP role will provide expert clinical management and coordination of care for general neurology, stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients across the continuum of care, encompassing both inpatient acute care management and outpatient clinic follow-up

Qualifications:

  • Current, unrestricted license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the State of New Jersey
  • Current national certification from an accredited body (e,g, ANCC, AANP, NCCPA)

Job Requirement:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduated from a Physician Assistant Program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs -CAAHEP
  • Certification from the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants -NCCPA
  • New Jersey License from the State Board of Medical Examiners-Physician Advisory Committee
  • In the case of a new graduate, they may be considered under the condition that he/she successfully takes and passes the Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and the New Jersey License examination from the State Board of Medical Examiners-- Physician Assistant Advisory Committee on the first available date following his/her graduation OR Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Registered as a Professional Nurse in the State of New Jersey
  • Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the New Jersey Board of Nursing
  • BLS is required
  • Master s degree required; Doctorate preferred
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an APN; experience in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Critical Care, or Emergency Medicine preferred
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire
  • Strong clinical knowledge base in stroke management and neurosciences, guided by evidence-based practices (AHA/ASA guidelines)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills

Job Specifics:

The APP will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary care teams, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, nursing staff, therapists, and care coordinators, to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care and optimize patient outcomes

The APP will report to Neurology APP service line with a local reporting structure to the CMO

Key Responsibilities:

Inpatient Clinical Management:

  • Conduct comprehensive history and physical examinations for admitted stroke and TIA patients within the emergency department and inpatient units
  • Formulate diagnoses, order and interpret diagnostic tests (e,g, neuroimaging, lab work), and develop comprehensive treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising/collaborating neurologist
  • Manage acute stroke protocols, including evaluation for intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy, in accordance with established guidelines (AHA/ASA)
  • Serve as an active member of the Code Stroke response team assuring necessary orders are placed and standard of care is met
  • Monitor patient progress, adjust treatment plans as necessary, and facilitate timely and appropriate discharge planning in collaboration with the care coordination team
  • Provide real-time education and clinical mentorship to nursing staff and other team members regarding acute stroke management and standards of care,

Outpatient Clinical Management:

  • Manage dedicated outpatient stroke and TIA follow-up clinics
  • Provide comprehensive secondary stroke prevention education, counseling, and management of risk factors (e,g, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, smoking cessation)
  • Assess long-term recovery, address post-stroke complications (e,g, spasticity, depression, fatigue), and coordinate ongoing rehabilitation needs
  • Ensure smooth transitions of caonciling medications, and making appropriate referrals to community resources or specialists,

Programmatic Support & Quality Improvement:

  • Actively participate in the Stroke Program's quality improvement initiatives, data collection, and performance metric reporting to maintain and advance Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center (or Primary Stroke Center) certification standards
  • Contribute to the development and revision of clinical protocols, order sets, and patient education materials
  • Engage in stroke research initiatives and professional development activities to remain current with advances in neuroscience
