Chief Therapist – RWJBarnabas Health
At RWJBarnabas Health, the Chief Therapist plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex clinical treatment oversight and departmental management procedures according to strict medical, legal, and professional regulatory standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during complex or crisis situations, ensuring accurate resource scheduling, delivering age-specific care across all lifespans, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the multidisciplinary oncology department.
A typical day for a Chief Therapist may include:
- Prepares technical staff assignments and daily coverage plans, clearly explains the process, and positions resources to facilitate a smooth workflow between simulation, dosimetry, and treatment units
- Operates advanced computer networks, billing systems, ARIA, and EPIC applications necessary to ensure a safe and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic procedure environment
- Assist physicians and the medical director during clinical reviews and peer review sessions by tracking, generating chart checklists, or monitoring follow-up recommendations
- Sets up departmental policies and essential operational guidelines following JCERT and regulatory frameworks, handles staff payroll, and reviews metrics to assist with administrative oversight
- Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts quality assurance compliance requirements, and reports equipment errors, staffing shortages, or procedure variances immediately to department leadership
- Monitors and calls out technical quality metrics, alerting the healthcare leadership team immediately to any changes in department operations or compliance risks
- Utilizes charting systems and hospital databases to enter accurately identified and verified records of patients, and retrieves old therapeutic and simulation reports when necessary
- Demonstrates working knowledge of radiation oncology protocols including NJDEP guidelines, APEX criteria, Joint Commission standards, and safety shielding techniques
- Collaborates professionally in an intensive clinical environment, leading monthly staff meetings and working in close cooperation with the Vice President and Medical Director
- Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume administrative multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures and over scheduled hours when required

To be considered for this Chief Therapist opportunity:
- Graduate of a JCERT accredited school of radiation therapy
- Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Active certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy
- Valid New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) licensure and active CPR certification
- Minimum of 7 years of clinical experience in Radiation Oncology is required
- Prior supervisory, managerial, or clinical tech leadership experience is preferred
- Proven proficiency utilizing specialized oncology software networks, specifically ARIA and EPIC EMR platforms
- Ability to manage administrative workflows including performance evaluations, payroll processing, and policy creation
- Demonstrated commitment to clinical instruction, with the ability to supervise and evaluate student technologists
