Job Overview:

Assumes responsibility for receiving and determining acceptability of all specimens received in the Department of Pathology, preparing specimens according to designated protocol for each laboratory procedure and engages in computer activity for the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System. Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to section productivity and cost effectiveness. Assumes responsibility for recognizing situations that require referral to Section Supervisor. Performs additional tasks as requested by Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee.

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to all policies regarding the safe handling of specimens; follows prescribed methods for needle and syringe control, and maintains and cleans accessioning and procurement dispatch area and equipment, such as countertops, centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.
  • Adheres to infection control practices and procedures
  • Adheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality.
  • Answers telephone in a timely manner giving factual information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines.
  • Completes mandatory education in a timely manner. Participates in on-going education (in service, continuing education, etc.).
  • Follows prescribed methods for needle/syringe control, adhering to safety/infection control procedures; reports unsafe conditions.
  • Maintains positive patient identification through specimen processing.
  • Recognizes situations that need to be brought to the attention of Section Supervisor, Administrative Director or Pathologist.
  • Reviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals in order to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedures.
