Job Overview: Under the general supervision of the section supervisor, the cytotechnologist performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, and reliable manner, according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Mathematical, computer reasoning and language skills at a college level (4 years).
  • Graduate of an approved school of cytology

Preferred:

  • BA/BS Degree. BS/BA requirement may be waived based on appropriate licensure and amount and type of experience.
  • ASCP or equivalent certification preferred

Essential Functions:

  • Processes and evaluates exfoliated cells from the human body to detect evidence of cancer and other pathological conditions. Identifies a myriad of minute, visual differential criteria for a host of malignant lesions and microbiologic organisms.
  • Is knowledgeable of disease processes and their clinical manifestations and evaluates clinical and therapeutic data.
  • Analyzes, compute and renders a differential diagnosis based on what they have learned, not simply to separate the normal from the abnormal.
  • Assists physicians and other hospital staff in the collection and interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies for cytology.
  • Diagnose and mark slides according to established classifications ranging from normal to cancerous cells. Records classification of slides reviewed and presents all slides with unusual cell features to pathologist for further study and diagnosis.
  • Processes all body materials such as exudates, scrapings, sputum, washings, brushings and body fluids, using procedures approved by the pathologists.
  • Processes cytology specimens collected ensuring proper identification, accessioning, specimen gross description, fixation, centrifugation, smear preparation, staining and coverslipping.
  • Evaluates requested procedures to determine the suitability of the specimen for processing and requests new specimen if determined to be unusable.
  • Takes periodic inventory of reagents and supplies to inform supervisor of depleted supplies. Prepares chemical reagents and stains in accordance with standard procedure using hazardous chemicals such as alcohol, xylene, etc.
