Job Overview: The Histology Assistant position assists the pathologist during the gross processing of surgical specimens.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

Preferred:

  • Classes in biology and related sciences preferred

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Per Diem
  • Day Shift
  • Variable Hours

Essential Functions:

  • Accurately coverslips and labels prepared slides, matches them to working drafts and arranges them for screening by the cytologists
  • Enters patient and specimen information into the Pathology Information system
  • Enters patient charges into the Hospital Information system
  • Performs maintenance of tissue processing instrument
  • Performs rapid H & E and Diff-quik staining on tissue specimen slides
  • Prepares smears and cytospins from body fluid specimens in accordance with established procedures
  • Prepares specimens by Frozen Section technique
  • Prepares tissue specimens for gross examination
  • Procures specimens from the OR, Special Procedures, and Same Day Surgery areas of the hospital
  • Responsible for filing slides in accordance with established procedure
  • Responsible for staining of all cytology slices using the modified Pap Stain procedure
  • Responsible for the daily rotation and filtration of stains, alcohol, and xylene
  • Verified that required information has been provided on the requisitions and that the specimen has been properly submitted, fixed and labeled per the patient ID policy
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
