Job Overview: The lead phlebotomist will support the night shift staff phlebotomists at RWJ New Brunswick.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Phlebotomy Certification
  • 5 years experience
  • Lab Specimen Processing Experience

Preferred:

  • Supervisory/Leadership experience

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Full Time
  • Night Shift
  • 11pm-7:30 am

Essential Functions:

Oversees training of new students, CCTS and new employees. Meets with trainees weekly to go over progress with orientation. Verifies that checklist, competency exams and all required orientation exams are completed before the end of the 90 day introductory period.

Performs direct observations, and formulates written competencies. observed. Verifies that all phlebotomists have completed required annual on-line tests, and provides input for employee evaluations.

Assures that all staff complete a minimum of 4 technical competencies annually.

Performs bench work at all phlebotomy workstations as needed. Checks phlebotomy workstations during the day and helps out or reassigns phlebotomy personnel as needed. Completes or helps in the completion of timecards.

Patient Identification:

Assures that staff properly identify patients utilizing two points of reference; full name and Medical Record number or Date of Birth

Consistently matches information on the patient identification band with information on the paperwork and specimen labels.

Confirms that staff are engaging in active patient identification (Asking the patient their full name)

Understands and teaches that patient identification is the MOST important aspect of blood collection.

Specimen Labeling:

Performs follow-up on staff to assure that samples are consistently labeled using the 5 required pieces of information needed on the Specimen (Full Name, Med Record Number, Date, Time, Initials of collector).

Via direct observations, assures specimens are consistently labeled in the presence of the patient.

Follows up on incidents of mislabeling.

Infection Control:

Assures effective handwashing within the section

Confirms that staff use and dispose of gloves as per procedure

Confirms that staff use and dispose of sharps as per procedure

Demonstrates understanding and working knowledge of Standard Precautions

Takes part in in-services as needed to address variance in infection rates (e.g. Blood Cultures, etc )

Customer Service:

Answers the telephone within 3 rings; provides name, greeting and location upon answering.

Demonstrates a professional demeanor at all times and understands that they are the face of the laboratory.

Avoids transferring calls, but when transfers are necessary is careful to transfer to the most appropriate person to answer the question of the caller.

Puts clients on hold when waiting. Returns calls to clients promptly.

Effectively schedules special tests (i.e. sweat, GTT)

Is polite, friendly, helpful and professional in all conversations and transactions with clients. Takes effective measures to assure that staff consistently adhere to all customer service protocols.

Team Work:

Acts as a Team Player by demonstrating cooperation and flexibility on the job as evidenced by the following indicators:

Demonstrates cooperation and assistance in working with other sections to achieve mutual goals and objectives of the department.

Helps provide break and meal coverage for staff.

Adheres to policies on attendance and reports to work on time to insure the change of shift runs smoothly and patient testing is not delayed

Works other than scheduled hours to help provide adequate staffing when needed.

Accepts and performs other duties as assigned with enthusiasm, complete them in the allotted time frame.

Assists with weekend coverage management coverage.

Safety:

Assures that staff utilize proper techniques and abides by safety regulations according to the following indicators:

Closely adheres to Standard Precautions, Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazcom protocols, and the OSHA Blood-Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.

Biohazard waste and non-biohazard waste is disposed of correctly

Spills are cleaned up immediately in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and MSDS instructions. Supervisor is notified.

Personal Protective Equipment (gloves, lab coats, masks, aprons, eyewear, etc.) are worn appropriately as indicated.

Environmental controls (barriers, sharps equipment, etc.) are used correctly as indicated.

Annual safety testing documentation is completed (fire, electrical, universal precautions, Hazcom, etc.)

Interpersonal Skills:

Communication, cooperation, and assistance are given promptly in a clear, courteous manner to co-workers, hospital staff, patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel according to the following criteria:

Demonstrates a hospitable, congenial and helpful attitude.

Utilizes good interpersonal relation skills, which include maintaining good working relations with fellow employees and maintains good rapport with all hospital personnel.

Answers the telephone in a friendly and courteous manner.

Accepts and performs, in a timely and correct manner, other duties as assigned.

Assists in overseeing and coordinating all reporting of hard copies results that print in processing area. Assures that staff consistently:

Sorts the outpatient/discharged patient reports to be mailed to the appropriate doctors and facilities.

Generates the doctors cover sheets if necessary and inserts the correct cover sheet with the correct report into an envelope.

Reports are available for pickup before the mailroom staff arrive for delivery & pickup.

As feasible, reports for docs should be consolidated into a single envelope, especially on weekends.
