Job Overview:

The primary purpose of the Oncology Pharmacy Technician position is to assist the Pharmacist in all aspects of pharmacy practice that do not require professional judgment or intervention for the purpose of dispensing medications, but such professional judgment would be required for the following processes: sterile/non-sterile product preparation, patient profile maintenance, department recordkeeping, billing, maintaining inventory. Also, assists in the handling of investigational drugs and associated recordkeeping. The Oncology Pharmacy Technician serves a vital role in patient safety through the performance of dose calculation double checks, accuracy of product selection and performance of both aseptic and hazardous drug compounding techniques that requires the use of a USP 797 800 compliant clean room and personal protective equipment to reduce exposure and contamination while maintaining sterility of the final product.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Prior experience as a Pharmacy Technician with oncology related experience
  • Previous sterile products compounding and/or hazardous drug compounding experience
  • Must pass certification of sterile compounding skills within the three (3) month probationary period of employment.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills. Must be computer-literate with proficiency and working knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR).

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • New Jersey Board of Pharmacy Technician License
  • Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT).
  • Completion of chemotherapy certification course and USP 797/800 certification upon hire.

Essential Functions:

  • Using aseptic technique consistent with USP 797 and USP 800 and NJAC 13:39-11 while following institutional and NIOSH guidelines, accurately and safely prepares chemotherapy as assigned. (Requires completion of formal certification program that covers policy, procedures, technique and law).a
  • Maintains the integrity of biologic safety cabinets by using proper techniques, daily cleaning, and maintaining certification.
  • Maintains the integrity of laminar airflow hoods by using proper techniques, daily cleaning, and maintaining certification.
  • Prepares and labels extemporaneously compounded non-sterile pharmaceuticals including the counting and auditing oral chemotherapy.
  • Documents and confirms documentation of patients adherence to oral chemotherapy clinical trials through pill counts .
  • For investigational drugs: a. Performs recordkeeping requirements related to the receipt and distribution of investigational drugs according to institutional, FDA and NCI Standards. b. Maintains adequate inventory of investigational drugs. Checks for and removes expired medication from stock. c. Utilizes both paper drug accountability and Internet based IXRS electronic methods for documenting use of experimental medications. d. Obtains and manages supply requests and accountability of commercial medications for use in non- clinical laboratory experiments.
  • Performs tasks necessary to ensure that the stock is available on the day of treatment. a. Uses computer generated reports, maintains adequate inventory levels in pharmacy and/or assigned infusion areas: including commercially available chemotherapeutic medications, investigational agents and controlled substances.
  • Retrieves and organizes Pharmacy Patient Profiles. a. Organizes Pharmacy Patient Profiles for each daily schedule. b. Maintains archived Pharmacy Patient Profiles for immediate accessibility for 1 year and 48-hour accessibility for 5 years.
  • Processes medication orders for preparation. a. Performs safety checks of all dose calculations (including dose, concentration, rate of infusion, duration of stability) and reconciles differences with Pharmacists prior to compounding.
  • Performs billing functions, including coding, data entry and audits, as assigned
  • Maintains pharmacy and electronic medical records (EMR) profiles as assigned including documentation of lot#, expiration dates and waste for billing purposes.
  • Performs daily audits to ensure proper documentation of medications dispensed and billed. Uses audit to query Pharmacists and Nurses to confirm documentation on Medication Administration Records to justify billing and/or generate a corrective action plan.
  • Performs recordkeeping related to the receipt and distribution of controlled substances per institutional policy.
  • Answers questions and other inquiries from medical and non-medical staff including physicians, nurses and medical technicians and directs questions, when appropriate, to the Pharmacist.
  • Assists with orientation and training of new staff.
  • Acts as a role model for corporate integrity, customer service and improved quality.
