Job Overview-

Functions in the role of Pediatric Advanced Practice Nurse (Practitioner), providing direct specialty-specific care to children (ages 0 to 21 years) at the Rutgers RWJMS, the RWJ University Hospital/Bristol Myers Squibb Children s Hospital, and Monmouth Medical Center. In-depth knowledge of child development from infants to adulthood is required (birth 21 years). Pediatric experience required, pediatric specialty experience preferred. CNRN certification preferred. Must have recent experience, minimum of five years of experience, in the direct care of pediatric patients with Infectious Diseases, including HIV. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong clinical nursing background, with experience working both collaboratively and independently within the APN scope of practice as part of the pediatric subspecialty team. Critical to one s longevity in this position are excellent interpersonal skills, both among colleagues and among our clients, many of whom have cognitive impairments and represent diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • PA degree required
  • Two years of experience in a physician office or hospital, preferred
  • Ability to make independent decisions about patient care
  • Experience assisting physicians in surgery, preferred
  • Experience diagnosing and treating patients, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of managed care basics, and experience working with a managed care and Medicare population
  • Knowledge of practice management and word processing software

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Full time
  • 40 hours

Essential Functions:

Office Responsibilities

  • Reviews lab results, x-rays, and MRI/CT results prior to entering patient's exam room
  • Takes patient history, and records the information on the patient's chart
  • Confers with physicians about new patient findings and potential diagnosis and treatment before they see each patient
  • Obtains needed equipment for exam room procedure
  • Administers therapeutic injections and performs minor procedures as needed
  • Reviews pre-operative instructions and explains the surgical process to patients who are about to have surgery
  • Provides diagnosis and treatment services to established patients and postoperative patients
  • Develops own practice and coordinates appointment scheduling templates with the Receptionist
  • Prescribes medications, treatments, and immunizations in accordance with physician protocols
  • Formulates and updates patient care plans; consults with physicians as needed
  • Orders pre-operative tests, CT scans, and MRIs
  • Performs patient education duties; shows surgical videos, hands out brochures, and directs patients to specific Internet sites for more information.
  • Oversees Medical Assistant's preparation of exam rooms, including re-stocking of treatment areas
  • Acts as backup and puts patients in rooms

Hospital Responsibilities

  • Conducts consultations as directed by physician.
  • Makes rounds on behalf of physicians
  • Assists surgeon in the operating room
  • Adheres to chart documentation requirements as outlined by hospital guidelines
  • Possible outside clinic and or hospital coverage
  • Returns patient phone messages at designated times throughout the day;
  • Triages incoming telephone calls; instructs patient and family regarding treatment instruction, then documents action taken in patient's chart
  • Calls in prescription requests to pharmacy; documents action on patient chart and obtains physician signature of approval
  • Oversees appointment bookings and ensures emergency situations are scheduled appropriately; maintains timely flow of patients
