Job Summary

The DB Retirement Manager is responsible for overseeing and administering all aspects of the health system's retirement benefit programs, including pension and other retirement savings vehicles.

This role ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, manages vendor relationships, provides employee education and support, and collaborates with HR and Finance teams to optimize retirement benefit offerings for over 45,000 employees across multiple facilities.

The position requires expertise in retirement plan administration, fiduciary responsibilities, and employee benefits management within the healthcare industry.

Essential Functions

  • Administer and oversee all retirement plans including pension and supplemental retirement programs
  • Ensure compliance with ERISA, IRS, DOL, and other applicable federal and state regulations
  • Manage relationships with third-party administrators, recordkeepers, and investment providers
  • Conduct annual plan reviews, audits, and performance evaluations
  • Prepare and review required filings, audits, and reports
  • Develop and implement retirement plan policies, procedures, and communication strategies
  • Provide retirement planning education and counseling to employees and retirees, as well as serve as a resource for complex retirement inquiries
  • Partner and collaborate with Finance team to forecast retirement liabilities and costs, as well as plan funding, actuarial valuations, and budgeting
  • Support open enrollment and benefit communication initiatives
  • Analyze plan utilization, costs, and effectiveness to recommend improvements

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field required
  • Professional certifications preferred (CRP, CEBS, CFP, CPA, or similar retirement/benefits credentials)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in retirement plan administration and management
  • Healthcare industry experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with large-scale retirement programs (1,000+ participants)
  • Demonstrated experience with pension and other retirement plans
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and third-party administrators

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Technical Knowledge

  • Comprehensive understanding of ERISA, IRS Code, and DOL regulations
  • Proficiency with retirement plan administration and HRIS systems and software
  • Knowledge of investment principles, fund management, and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Understanding of healthcare industry compensation and benefit structures
  • Familiarity with actuarial concepts and plan design principles
  • Familiarity with healthcare workforce dynamics and unionized environments
  • Vendor management and contract negotiation skills

Analytical Skills

  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and database management
  • Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and financial data
  • Experience with plan testing (ADP/ACP, top-heavy, coverage testing)

Communication Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences including executives and employees
  • Ability to explain complex retirement concepts in understandable terms
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities for diverse employee populations
  • Strong interpersonal skills for employee counseling and vendor management

Project Management

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and initiatives
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in regulatory compliance
