The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Overview:

The clinical Informatics specialist under the direction of the Informatics Manager integrates clinical science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in clinical practice.

The clinical informatics specialist supports nurses, consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in the user of technology to support clinical care.

Activities include but are not limited to collaborating with customers and other IT team members to partner to define problems.

Participates in the design, development, implementation, education, and evaluation technology in the clinical areas.

In addition, they are responsible for advocacy, identification of issues, documentation, and escalation of issues.

The clinical informatics specialist will work with individuals of other professions to maintain a climate of mutual respect and shared values.

They will communicate with patients, families, communities, and professionals in health and other fields in a responsive and responsible manner that supports a team approach to the promotion and maintenance of health.

Requirements: 

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy with (2-4 years) in a hospital setting strongly preferred.
  • Background in pharmacy automation, pharmacy computer system applications, or information technology experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of contemporary hospital/clinical practice and service and understanding of general hospital operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact constructively with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Requires excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Registered pharmacist in the state of New Jersey.
  • Epic Willow certification preferred

Job Specific Requirements

The Informatics Specialist 1 is responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Provides operational support, with oversight, to local team to provide customer support, education, implement clinical changes, coordinate and collaborate with local SME to plan, deliver, and evaluate changes related to the use of technology and data
  • Rigorous documentation, with oversight, of problems including audits, design sessions, planning, collaboration, and implementation activities (including but not limited to rounds and in-services) of their teams
  • With oversight, ensures that all problems have discrete metrics of outcomes to ensure a scientific and rigorous approach to outcomes
  • Maintains a culture within the team and with external collaboration upholding the RWJBH standards of ethics, culturally congruent practice, and communication/ collaboration
  • Maintains required professional development, competencies, and continuing education
  • Collaborates with local SME s in Quality and Regulatory under the guidance of leadership to ensure optimal quality of practice by ensuring awareness and competency to new regulations
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership
  • Applicant is expected to obtain and maintain Epic certification as current in accordance with dept requirements

Unit/Dept Specific Competencies

  • Works in the build, implementation, integration, and maintenance of automation and technology to assure safe and appropriate use of medications
  • Assures appropriate testing of all integrated applications
  • Ensures that knowledge-based information, which includes the scientific literature of healthcare, is appropriately considered, and evaluated prior to implementation of software changes
  • Participates in development, monitoring, and evaluation of decision support for continuous improvement, particularly for medications
  • Partners with clinicians to identify and facilitate advanced clinical decision support implementation within the electronic clinical goals
  • Participates in functional testing for human factors issues before and after system upgrades and improvements
  • Responsible for order set management: Development and maintenance of overall principles for safe design and use of order sets, with a focus on medications
  • Development and maintenance of standard order set clinical content, standards, patient safety principles, and evidence-based practice guidelines
  • Promotes effective communication concerning medication use applications
  • Assumes responsibility for the timely dissemination of information as related to pharmacy automation and technology
  • Participates as a member of interdepartmental committees when requested and imparts knowledge related to pharmacy automation and technology
  • Actively participates in the development, prioritization, and determination of core clinical decision-support systems
  • Ensures pharmacy systems are compliant with and support regulatory guidelines
  • Ensures that medication related systems support compliance with state and federal rules and regulations
  • Ensures that medication related systems support compliance with Joint Commission, Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services, and recognized pharmacy practice standards
  • Participates in research activities related to the advancement of pharmaceutical care
  • Provides support for pharmacy residency research activities
  • Provides support to medical staff and allied health professionals for drug utilization data gathering and analysis
  • Supports drug data analysis for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee activities
  • Provides support for internal audits, billing, and financial analysis
  • Assists pharmacy leadership in the advancement of pharmacy automation and technology
  • Helps develops and facilitate the implementation of goals and objectives for the advancement of automation technology in the Department of Pharmacy
  • Participates in quality projects and on assigned committees to provide expertise on using the clinical information system to achieve goals
  • In conjunction with the pharmacy leadership team, aids the institution s committees and clinical leaders to ensure that medication-related systems support interoperability and trans portability of clinical information while maintaining patient safety and confidentiality

Leadership/Professional Practice:

  • Participates in the orientation, education, and mentoring of new staff (ie pharmacists, pharmacy residents, nurses, pharmacy technicians, etc) as needed
  • Demonstrates teamwork within the Pharmacy Department and participate in the group approach to patient care by providing support to peers and other practice areas as needed in addition to daily assignments
  • Demonstrates reliability and accountability to Pharmacy Department, colleagues, and healthcare professionals
  • Serves as an internal and external liaison for the goals and vision of the Department of Pharmaceutical services
  • Demonstrate dedication and loyalty to the department and colleagues
  • Participates actively with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and other groups as requested
  • Serves as an educator for pharmacy residency and student experiential education programs
  • Maintain training and experience in pharmacy practice areas appropriate for preceptor assignments
  • Designs and implements quality improvement changes to the organization s medication-use system
  • Conducts practice-related projects, clinical research, or pharmacy CQI initiatives using effective project management skills
  • Reviews protocols, orders, and policies as requested
  • Reviews, evaluates, and discusses the results of investigations of pharmacy informatics/practice-related issues
