Section II: Summary of Job Function

Organize and administers individualized age specific professional care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital in support of medical care

Supports philosophy, objectives and the mission and vision of Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Department of Nursing

Practices in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics for Nurses, Department of Health Regulations, JCAHO requirements and other regulatory agencies

Participates in patient teaching and discharge planning

Participates in Unit Performance Improvement evaluation activities

Section III: Job Qualifications/Education/Training/Certification/Licensure

Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing Certified as an Advanced Practice nurse in pediatrics in the State of New Jersey

CPON certification within 1 year of hire, PALS certification, Chemotherapy certification

Current New Jersey RN licensure required

Completion of all Orientation requirements of Saint Barnabas Medical Center

Successful completion of all Orientation Programs

Work Environment and Hazards

Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable disease and risk of physical injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment and from exposure to caustic substances

Section 1: Job-Specific Requirements of Position

Complies with Medication Reconciliation policy

Complies with unit and departmental scheduling guidelines,

Delegates and prioritizes work assignments according to the individual associate's competence and patient care needs

Demonstrates proper procedure for care and maintenance of central lines: flushing, blood draws and dressing changes

Demonstrates the ability to recognize hematological and oncological emergencies, and take appropriate action when one occurs

Develops, implements and evaluates a comprehensive plan of care for daily management of hematology/oncology patients: sickle cell crisis, chemotherapy, fever/neutropenia

Evaluates effectiveness, interventions and revises plan of care accordingly

Implements the policies of the hospital and Nursing Department

Initiates, maintains and monitors chemotherapy, observing for side effects and biohazardous exposure

Manages pediatric conditions and illnesses, acute and chronic with medical collaboration

Performs assessment and reassessment of patients according to applicable department standards and identified tools

Performs interventions in accordance with current policy and procedure, safety guidelines and infection control principles

Prescribes medications and therapy according to state of New Jersey and according to protocols sent forth in collaborative agreement

Provides accurate and concise information when recording inpatient patient activity in order to assure continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient visits

Provides patient/family education according and documents same

Sets goals and formulates appropriate multidisciplinary interventions to meet these goals,

Transmits pertinent patient information to appropriate individual i,e, MD, supervisor, discharge planner, etc

Uses an understanding of the principles of acute and chronic pain management to assess each patient's individual needs and provide appropriate and specific treatment and care

Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient s age specific needs and provide age specifient and care

Utilizes the nursing process with a multidisciplinary approach in the delivery of patient care
