The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills, and professional experience. Specific on-call rates and shift differentials will be discussed during the interview process.

Job Overview:
The Psychiatric Emergency Services Crisis Professional maintains the requirements, qualifications, and duties of an Affiliated Emergency Services (AES) Crisis Intervention Specialist in N.J.A.C. 10:31-4.3 in accordance with the NJ Mental Health contract.

Qualifications:

  • BSW/BS from an accredited program from an accredited educational institution plus five plus years of experience in a psychiatric setting.
  • A Master’s degree in a mental health related field from an accredited educational institution with 2 years clinical experience.
  • Licensure as a registered professional nurse.
  • Preferred: LAC/LSW.

Scheduling Requirements:

  • On-Call Coverage (Must be available for various shifts across Days, Evenings, Overnights, and Weekends).

Essential Functions:

  • Performs mental health evaluation to assist in determining a patient’s level of care.
  • Communicates findings with on-call psychiatrist/tele-psychiatrist to decide on appropriate disposition of patient within the Network, other agencies or home. Communicates this to the ED staff.
  • Initiates admission process to either a Network facility or other facility as appropriate.
  • Arranges transportation through the Medical Center for patients requiring transfer between facilities.
  • Serves as an advocate for clients by facilitating connection with personal support systems and follow-up mental health services.
  • Completes appropriate communication with areas of the continuum.
  • Provides appropriate forms and releases.
  • Maintains statistical records as appropriate.
  • Coordinates commitment process through the designated screening centers.
  • Participates in QA/QI activities.
  • Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient’s age specific treatment and care.
  • Once contacted, arrives in the Emergency Department within 30 minutes.
  • Performs a face-to-face mental health assessment to determine the appropriate level of care in consulting with on-call Psychiatrist.
  • If psychiatric inpatient admission is required, the crisis professional will obtain insurance precertification and contact the on-call psychiatrist for final authorization of the admission.
  • Complies with any agreement RWJ-Rahway has with managed care companies for on-site face-to-face evaluations if acute services are necessary.
  • When patient admission is not required, the crisis professional gives the patient the Central intake number and faxes all information to them.
  • Documents assessment on the designated medical record in accordance with established Department documentation standard.
