Job Overview
The Mental Health Worker provides essential direct patient care, clinical support, and crisis intervention under the direction of nurses and physicians within the Open Mental Health Unit at Trinitas Regional Medical Center. This role closely monitors patients' physical and emotional well-being, performs vital clinical tasks like phlebotomy and EKGs, and assists with daily living activities. Operating as an integral member of the psychiatric team, this professional facilitates therapeutic and recreational groups, documents patient data, and ensures a safe, healing environment in compliance with hospital policies.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Behavioral Health, or a related field, OR an active AIMS MHA certification. (A minimum of five (5) years of experience within behavioral health is acceptable in lieu of a degree).
- Active American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support) certification, or ability to obtain it within six (6) months of hire.
- Strong baseline of interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively document patient data and collaborate with medical staff.
Preferred:
- Prior experience working with psychiatric and/or substance abuse patients.
- Background or active interest in psychology or sociology.
- Proven experience in non-violent crisis intervention techniques.

Essential Functions
- Provides standard nursing care delegated by the Registered Nurse, including taking/recording vital signs, recognizing abnormalities, and immediately reporting changes to the nurse in charge.
- Performs clinical tasks including venipuncture (drawing blood), collecting and labeling specimens (blood, urine, sputum, stool), and performing EKGs.
- Assists patients with their daily living activities (eating, dressing, bathing) and escorts patients safely throughout the facility.
- Contributes to the formulation, implementation, and updating of patient care and treatment plans developed by the psychiatric team.
- Plans, leads, and participates in therapeutic, recreational, group, and community meetings for residents.
- Participates in the patient admission, orientation, and transfer processes, and supervises family interactions during visitations.
- Serves as a preceptor and mentor by assisting in the orientation of incoming employees and students.
- Maintains a clean, comfortable, and safe unit environment; coordinates linen/supply stock and participates in patient room or body searches as assigned by the professional nurse.
