Job Overview:

The Special Procedure / Interventional Radiology Technologist performs diagnostic imaging examinations and therapeutic interventional procedures as ordered by physicians. This role supports Interventional Radiologists by assisting with angiographic, fluoroscopic, and image-guided procedures using advanced imaging technologies including single-plane and biplane fluoroscopy, CT, and ultrasound.
The technologist is responsible for producing high-quality images to support accurate diagnosis and treatment, maintaining sterile technique, preparing procedural equipment, and ensuring patient safety throughout all phases of care. The technologist reviews and documents pertinent patient history and physiological data, processes exam documentation and billing information, and maintains accurate records in RIS, PACS, and related systems.

This role requires demonstrated competency in interventional workflows, equipment operation, inventory management, and adherence to departmental policies, regulatory standards, and National Patient Safety Goals. Continuing education and ongoing competency validation are required to maintain and advance professional practice.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of an approved AMA School of Radiologic Technology.
  • Licensed by the State of New Jersey (required) Registered Radiologic Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (preferred)
  • Successful completion of all required orientation and competency programs Maintains current BLS Healthcare Provider certification

Essential Functions:

  • Obtain all patients x-ray jackets with previously performed exams, which relate to current exam being performed. Locate all outside film.
  • Obtain proper physician order in chart or chips computer system for exam being performed.
  •  Obtain x-ray requisitions for all exams being performed in the special procedures suite.
  • Locate patient’s lab results to ensure correct tests were ordered and the results are within normal parameters
  • Technical aspects: preparation of the digital computers with patient records and adequate space for study.
  • Load schonander magazines and contrast injectors.
  • Gather appropriate supplies.{i.e. Catheters, wires and balloons for patient exams}
  • Set up angiographic trays using sterile technique and scouting patient.
  • Position patient independently to obtain quality results during the arteriogram or exam being performed, as per departmental protocol or as deemed necessary by the radiologist
  • Assist senior and staff technologist in positioning patient as needed.
  • Select proper technique to obtain high quality radiograph during examination.
  • Use proper collimation as needed.
  • The use of blousing devices.
  • Program proper filming sequences with the digital computer in all angio suites.
  • Select proper filming sequences as per departmental standards or as per radiologist request.
  • nstruct and assist staff and senior technologist in the programming of the schonander filming system.
  • Instruct and assist staff and senior technologist in the loading and setting of the injector system
  • Serves as an instructor and preceptor to newly hired technicians and students who rotate through the special procedures department.
  • Place patient on proper monitoring devices.
  • Prep the patient for the examination.
  • Assist radiologist during examination.
  • Assist radiology nursing staff during examination.
  •  Generate computerized images at the completion of the procedure.
  • Organize procedure suite in an adequate time frame to allow commencement of next scheduled procedure with minimal delays, while maintaining universal safety standards.
  • Achieve and uphold high quality of standard in x-ray films, while minimizing patient and staff radiation exposure when conducting procedures in the angio suites.
  •  Maintain equipment in proper working order.
  •  Maintain all x-ray protection devices in conjunction with regulatory standards and departmental policies. {i.e. Aprons, thyroid collars, collimator. Performs all in-services on upgrades of the x-ray equipment within the angio suite.
  • Advises senior and staff technologists, and non-departmental personnel on pertinent changes within the department.
  •  Obtain physician orders and locate patient lab results from chips system.
  • Track all procedures performed, and proficient in all functions of the ris system.
  •  Responsible for all updates in the tracking codes of the ris system.
  •  Send and print digital images, perform special functions with the easy vision system.
  • Responsible for the training and assistance of the senior and staff technologist concerning updates and system functions.
