Senior Vice President, Physician Performance Improvement
The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Physician Performance Improvement is responsible for the enterprise-wide strategy, execution, and outcomes related to physician-driven clinical performance. Reporting directly to the System Chief Medical and Quality Officer, this role serves as the system’s primary architect of physician performance transformation, aligning data and reporting, behaviors, incentives, clinical standards, and care models to drive sustained, measurable improvement across all sites of care. This executive leader partners closely with physician, nursing, advanced practice provider, and operational leadership to drive measurable improvements in quality, safety, patient outcomes, and value-based performance. This role is accountable for achieving top-decile national performance in key clinical outcome metrics, including mortality, readmissions, hospital-acquired conditions, and patient safety indicators, while fostering a culture of physician engagement, continuous improvement, and accountability.
As the Senior Vice President, Physician Performance Improvement, a typical day might include the following:
- Lead enterprise-wide physician performance improvement initiatives across acute, ambulatory, post-acute, and community settings, partnering with physician, nursing, advanced practice provider, and operational leaders to drive measurable gains in quality, safety, patient outcomes, and value-based care performance.
- Analyze real-time physician performance dashboards, Vizient Clinical Database metrics, CMS Stars, Leapfrog scores, mortality indices, readmission trends, and patient safety indicators to identify unwarranted clinical variation and prioritize high-impact improvement opportunities.
- Facilitate executive governance meetings with service line leaders, department chairs, medical staff leaders, and clinical operations teams to establish accountability for physician performance, clinical outcomes, and achievement of top-decile national benchmarks.
- Collaborate with Clinical Informatics and digital health teams to optimize Epic clinical pathways, predictive analytics, AI-enabled decision support tools, and physician scorecards that support proactive interventions for high-risk patient populations.
- Drive physician engagement through peer-to-peer coaching, professional practice evaluation (OPPE/FPPE), mentoring, and transparent performance reporting while aligning compensation models, incentives, and clinical governance structures with quality and safety outcomes.
- Partner with population health, care management, and post-acute teams to strengthen transitions of care, improve discharge quality, and implement standardized care pathways that reduce avoidable readmissions and improve longitudinal patient outcomes.
- Champion a culture of high reliability and zero harm by leading physician-driven initiatives focused on mortality reduction, hospital-acquired conditions, patient safety, regulatory readiness, and evidence-based practice standardization across the health system.
This role might be for you if:
- You are passionate about transforming physician performance and shaping the future of clinical excellence across a complex health system, with the opportunity to directly influence quality, safety, patient outcomes, and value-based care performance.
- You thrive in highly collaborative environments and enjoy partnering with physician leaders, department chairs, service line executives, and operational teams to drive meaningful change across inpatient, ambulatory, post-acute, and community care settings.
- You are energized by leveraging advanced analytics, predictive modeling, AI-enabled clinical decision support tools, and Epic optimization strategies to modernize care delivery and accelerate performance improvement at scale.
- You are motivated by the opportunity to influence organizational strategy and physician behavior through innovative accountability frameworks, physician scorecards, compensation models, and clinical governance structures.
- You are committed to achieving top-decile national performance and advancing measurable improvements in mortality, readmissions, patient safety indicators, CMS Stars, Vizient rankings, Leapfrog scores, and other nationally benchmarked quality measures.
- You value building cultures of physician engagement, peer accountability, continuous learning, and high reliability through coaching, mentoring, and professional practice evaluation initiatives.
To be considered for this opportunity, you must have a MD or DO degree, and a minimum of 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare system in healthcare safety, quality, and physician performance. Experience in an academic healthcare system and advanced training in quality improvement, healthcare leadership, or business is strongly preferred. We are looking for someone with comprehensive and demonstrated understanding of performance improvement, quality assessment, regulatory and risk management, patient safety, and program management with a proven ability to influence physician behavior. A successful candidate will also have extensive knowledge of performance improvement theory and applications; and data analysis including experience with the Vizient Clinical Data Base, CMS Stars, and Leapfrog, as well as deep knowledge of national, state, and local quality improvement initiatives, regulations, and accreditation requirements.
