The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview: 

Under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, Technicians are responsible for the preparation and distribution of all inpatient medications including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. 

Qualifications: 

Required: 

  • High School Diploma or GED 

Preferred: 

  • PTCB Certification  

Essential Functions: 

  • Preparation of medication doses under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist. 

  • Accurately fills ADM medication batches utilizing Pyxis ParRx system with correct drug, dose, route and number of doses. Assures on-time completion of all doses filled. 

  • Performs inspections of medication storage areas. 

  • Repackages bulk medications, as needed, into unit dose form according to Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines. 
     

  • Accurately prepares extemporaneous products under direct Pharmacist supervision. Has complete understanding of balance technique weighing, measuring and mixing of all components to provide a homogenous, pharmaceutically elegant compound. 
     

  • Batches sufficient quantities of medications as needed while minimizing waste. 

  • Preparation of Sterile products: 
     

  • Exhibits a complete understanding of aseptic technique principles. 
    Consistently prepares sterile admixtures (TPN, Chemo, IVAD) according to aseptic technique principles. 
     

  • Works in an organized manner, batches products in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice.  

  • Allows no mix-up of look-alike, sound-alike drugs. 
     

  • Accurately measures each ingredient, leaving each ingredient and syringe drawn back to appropriate calibration for Pharmacists checking. 
     

  • Prepares the correct number of doses in a timely manner, such that all doses are available by the next scheduled administration time. 
     

  • Always informs a Pharmacist when doses are ready for checking. 

  • Delivery of medications: 
    Consistently delivers Pyxis medications, sterile products and stock on time and to the correct nursing stations. 
     

  • Consistently places medications requiring refrigeration in the nursing station refrigerators. 
     

  • Consistently delivers narcotics to the correct nursing stations. Verifies narcotic count in Pyxis and reports and aids in resolving any discrepancies with nurse and obtains required nursing signatures prior to leaving unit. Files signature sheets upon return to Pharmacy. 
     

  • Picks up medication returns and delivers medication envelopes hourly. 
    Delivers “Pharmacy Order Clarification Forms” to correct unit and scans back to pharmacy copy of clarification. 
     

  • Delivers “STAT” medications immediately upon request a Pharmacist. 
    Picks up expired I.V. medication and un-delivered medications from patient floors. 

  • Inventory and clerical responsibility: 
    Answers the telephone, screens, and directs calls to appropriate individuals, answers routine inquires. 
     

  • Accurately charges and credits patient accounts for medication as well as floor stock and hospital satellite requisitions. 
     

  • Stocks the Pharmacy in the absence of the inventory Technician, maintaining established par levels of all medications. Immediately places items falling below par on want list. Indicates on storeroom list all items that are removed from the storeroom. 

  • Continually upgrades knowledge and skills to increase scope of practice: 
    Uses knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient in the following age categories: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. 
     

  • Uses the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in department policies and procedures. 
    Maintains continuing competency and applies new skills to improve the quality and scope of pharmaceutical service provided (i.e. Pyxis, chemotherapy preparation, etc.) 

  • Organizes work-time to respond to established priorities. Uses time effectively and productively during periods of low department activity. 

  • Communicates clearly, directly and in a professional manner. Provides information accurately and completely. 

  • Participates in meetings (speaks opinion, respects differences, listens carefully, stay on topic). Arrives at meetings and appointments on time. 

  • Follows hospital and departmental rules, policies and directives: wears identification badge. 

  • Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with hospital center and department guidelines. 

  • Professional interpersonal interactions are handled in a positive and constructive manner. Professionally addresses others (eye contact, handshake, smile, voice, posture). Reacts in a positive manner to requests, questions and suggestions. 

  • Collaborates with others to complete job duties as appropriate. 

  • Is dedicated to the process of PDCA method of Performance Improvement. 

  • Assures complete confidentiality is maintained in all activities, verbal and written. 

  • Maintains good attendance, in accordance with hospital policy regarding absences and lateness. 

  • Recognizes change as a growth process and is open to considering and following new ideas and approaches to doing things.
