At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, they ensure that medications are prepared, distributed, and tracked in a safe and rational manner according to legal and professional standards. They are responsible for managing drug distribution workflows, maintaining automated dispensing systems, restocking emergency carts, and providing high-quality technical support to the pharmacy department.

A typical day for an Pharmacy Technician may include:

  • Manages drug distribution workflows by collecting, processing, and preparing medication orders accurately prior to distribution.
  • Refills unit-dosed medication bins systematically and delivers prepared medications safely to assigned nursing units.
  • Coordinates medication logistics related to patient transfers and discharges, ensuring accurate record-keeping and medication tracking.
  • Executes secure delivery of controlled substances to all designated hospital areas in strict compliance with safety regulations.
  • Oversees the maintenance and routine replenishment of all Pyxis automatic dispensing machines across the facility.
  • Performs inventory audits to check for, document, and remove expired medications from active pharmacy and floor stock.
  • Restocks and seals emergency code carts rapidly and accurately to ensure readiness for critical patient care situations.
  • Prepares and labels outpatient prescriptions precisely for pharmacist verification and patient pickup.
  • Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals extemporaneously, applying accurate labels and measurements based on department formulations.
  • Utilizes pharmacy software systems efficiently to track inventory, update patient profiles, and maintain department documentation.
  • Collaborates closely with pharmacists and nursing staff to deliver timely service and resolve distribution discrepancies.

To be considered for this Pharmacy Technician opportunity:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required; must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Must be registered with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician in good standing.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required, or must be obtained within 6 months of hire and actively maintained.
  • Prior experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or retail environment is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with clinical systems such as Pyxis automated dispensing machines and EPIC pharmacy software is a strong asset.
  • Flexibility to follow workflows, adapt to changing schedules, and maintain high standards of patient safety.
