Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – RWJBarnabas Health

A typical day for a Certified Medical Assistant may include:

  • Collect co-pays & documents in the patient's chart
  • Replenish supplies, stocks, and cleans exam rooms
  • Pre-certifies surgical and other procedures, if appropriate
  • Schedules tests and off-site procedures when necessary
  • Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines
  • Puts charts up for physicians when the patient is ready in the exam room
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments
  • Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor procedures
  • Obtains and handles laboratory specimens according to CLIA guidelines
  • Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to the Manager
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization
  • Greets patients and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patients for exam or treatment
  • Prepares blood samples for transport to a reference lab using a centrifuge; completes appropriate requisition paperwork for processing and billing of blood specimens
  • Ensures that laboratory samples are picked up by the reference laboratory daily
  • Perform an accurate search for the patient in the database, thus reducing the number of duplicate patient records in the EMR system
  • Obtain all appropriate demographic and financial coverage for the patient and enter the data into the Registration Database
  • Schedule appointments using the correct protocols established by the department
  • Assessing the patients' financial ability to pay for services and provide patients with necessary information required
  • Other duties assigned

  • This position offers a consistent Monday through Friday schedule from 8:30am - 4:30pm, allowing you to build strong patient relationships while maintaining a work-life balance. 
  • You hold a current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential (AAMA, AECA, AMCA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT, NCMA, or NHA) and a current American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • A minimum of 6 months CMA experience is required and electronic medical record (EMR) systems, Epic, knowledge is preferred.
