Job Overview:

The Advanced Practice Provider functions as an independent care provider in collaboration with the Neurosurgery Department

Their advanced practice provider is characterized by comprehensive health assessments and management of patients with acute and/or chronic health problems

Educate patients and/or families regarding disease process, medical intervention, health promotion, pain management and perform clinical procedures

Education:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of New Jersey or Physician Assistant Advisory Registration & Licensure by the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of New Jersey
  • Masters prepared in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Physician Assistant Certificatio
  • Certification(s): Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Certifications

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Care for all inpatient neurosurgical patients; including but not limited to inserting and managing external ventricular drains, lumbar drains, subdural evacuating port system (SEPS)
  • Performing bedside lumbar puncture
  • Removal of drains at the bedside
  • Placing sutures when needed
  • Prepare patients for surgery including scheduling, images needed, consent, clearances, preop orders, etc
  • Assist with surgery and procedure on the floors as needed
  • Care for patients after surgery including pain control, drain removal, suture and staple removal, etc
  • Round with attendings and carry out changes to plan of care
  • Carry and answer the call-phone
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and departments
  • Attend interdisciplinary rounds
  • Evaluate new consultations and complete needed workup
  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Daily patient rounds and write daily progress notes
  • Discharge planning, orders, and prescriptions
  • Educate and support the nurses as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
