Pharmacy Technician Specialty – RWJBarnabas Health
The Pharmacy Technician Specialty plays a critical role in supporting medication safety and continuity of care in the Emergency Department. Working collaboratively with pharmacists, providers, patients, and families, they obtain accurate medication histories, reconcile home medications, and maintain electronic medication records to ensure safe and effective patient care. They are responsible for identifying medication discrepancies, communicating with retail pharmacies, and supporting clinical decision-making through accurate documentation.
A typical day for a Pharmacy Technician Specialty may include:
- Interviews patients and family members to obtain complete and accurate medication histories upon admission to the Emergency Department
- Reviews external prescription histories and contacts patients' retail pharmacies to clarify medications and resolve discrepancies
- Updates and reconciles patients' home medication lists within the electronic medical record while documenting all medication history activities
- Identifies medication discrepancies, duplicate therapies, and potential concerns for pharmacist review
- Communicates medication-related information to pharmacists and healthcare providers to support safe and effective patient care
- Assists pharmacists in verifying patient-supplied medications and identifying appropriate formulary alternatives when applicable
- Maintains accurate electronic medication databases within the Emergency Department and main pharmacy
- Utilizes healthcare informatics systems to document daily activities and support medication management workflows
- Provides professional, compassionate communication when interacting with patients, families, retail pharmacies, and interdisciplinary care teams
- Performs additional pharmacy support duties as assigned to promote efficient department operations

To be considered for this Pharmacy Technician Specialty opportunity:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree preferred
- Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy in good standing required
- One year of retail pharmacy experience preferred
- National Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification required within one year of employment
- Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills, including the ability to work within electronic medical record systems
