Job Overview:
The role of a Financial Counselor is to step in when a patient needs support by ensuring financial coverage is cleared for hospital services. Imagine your loved one without insurance, unsure of what to do next, while in the hospital. That's where you as a financial counselor come in. Our Financial Counselors are critical to patient care and serve as a patient advocate working collaboratively with social work, case management, and clinical teams to support access to care.
As a Financial Counselor, a typical day might include:
- Patient facing in a hospital setting, seeing anywhere from 20 to 30 patients a shift by appointment, phone call, or bedside to discuss the requirements for Charity Care or Medicaid.
- Counsel patients on their eligibility for programs and submit applications for timely approval.
- Handle regular interaction with patients, families, visitors, clinical staff, and hospital departments.
- Create financial estimates and collect point-of-service payments when appropriate.
- Act as a patient advocate, addressing concerns related to billing, access to care, and service quality
- Collaborate with social workers and case management to support funding for discharge planning
- Ensure accurate and timely account updates related to Medicaid, Charity Care, or commercial coverage
- Research and resolve issues that may delay payment or account resolution
- Support quality, productivity, and collection goals while maintaining patient-centered service
- Partner across the revenue cycle and hospital departments to facilitate efficient account resolution.

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the below schedule and skill requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Available on rotating weekends and holidays
- Available for 37.5 hours per week
- Willingness to report to one of the following hospitals:
- Clara Maass Medical Center - Belleville, NJ
- Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center - Livingston, NJ
- Newark Beth Israel Medical Center - Newark, NJ
- Jersey City Medical Center - Jersey City, NJ
- Trinitas Regional Medical Center - Elizabeth, NJ
- RWJ University Hospital Rahway - Rahway, NJ
- Training will take place throughout the healthcare system for the first 4 weeks of employment.
- Strong attention to detail and computer proficiency
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Bilingual skills: English/Spanish/Arabic/Creole or Portuguese (Preferred)
