The Site Finance Officer (SFO) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton/Somerset, acts as a trusted financial advisor to our hospital CEO and executive team. You’ll partner closely with leadership on strategic planning, keep day-to-day financial operations running smoothly, and serve as our key bridge to RWJBH system leadership.
Taking a proactive, hands-on approach, the SFO will guide the budgeting process, build smart tracking tools, and help drive hospital growth by fostering strong relationships with medical leaders and discovering new technologies and services. Plus, you’ll oversee three vital teams: Supply Chain, Health Information Management, and Admitting/Registration.
As a Site Finance Officer a typical day might include the following:
- Navigating Operations & Managing Time: Prioritizing and balancing multiple assignments simultaneously, executing tasks with a high sense of urgency, accuracy, and resilience when handling setbacks.
- Supporting & Leading the Team: Staying highly visible and accessible on the floor, utilizing effective retention practices (interviewing, giving performance feedback, offering recognition, and addressing conflicts constructively), while fostering a culturally competent, diverse environment.
- Managing Resources & Budgets: Checking daily staffing needs against demand, allocating labor and non-labor resources efficiently, and proactively monitoring budget variances to stay within targets.
- Driving Quality & Continuous Improvement: Applying continuous quality improvement (CQI) principles, evaluating current workflows, gathering feedback, and implementing new ideas to optimize productivity and service.
- Delivering Customer Excellence: Building positive relationships with patients, physicians, visitors, and staff, while promptly following through on inquiries and using customer feedback to refine processes.
This role might be for you if:
- Strategic Financial Expertise: You have a strong track record of partnering with senior executives on strategic planning, building long-range five-year business plans, and forecasting financial trends to drive hospital growth.
- Mastery of Financial Compliance & Reporting: You excel at delivering precise, timely financial reports for monthly closes, external agencies, and regulatory bodies while keeping up with complex federal and state compliance requirements.
- Budgetary & Capital Management: You possess strong discipline in developing operating and capital budgets and know how to keep hospital operations running effectively within designated financial guardrails.
- Revenue Cycle Optimization: You are skilled at analyzing revenue cycle metrics, identifying performance gaps, and implementing solutions to improve charge capture, reduce billing denials, and streamline payment processes.
- Margin Improvement & Business Planning: You thrive on finding creative ways to optimize margins, running financial feasibility studies for new service lines, and spotting growth opportunities.
- Collaborative Leadership & Financial Coaching: You enjoy working alongside clinical and operational managers, acting as a translator between finance and healthcare operations, and teaching leaders how to manage their department budgets effectively.
- Continuous Improvement Mindset: You bring a data-driven approach to operations by setting performance benchmarks, monitoring progress, and streamlining cross-departmental workflows.
To be considered for this opportunity, we’re looking for a seasoned finance professional with 8 to 10 years of experience in mid-level accounting or finance, ideally backed by a Master’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting, or a CPA license. You’ll be a great fit if you bring a deep understanding of GAAP alongside a strong track record in short- and long-term budgeting, rolling forecasts, and product-line profitability analysis. We value candidates who excel at leveraging predictive analytics and financial data to craft clear statements, reports, and projections. On the technical side, you should be a true power user with tools like Strata, Axiom, PeopleSoft, and Excel, while being completely comfortable navigating the everyday Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
