At RWJBarnabas Health, our Ambulatory Care Registered Nurses help patients and families navigate their healthcare needs with confidence, compassion, and timely clinical support. As an Ambulatory Care RN, you'll combine clinical assessment, telephonic triage, care coordination, and direct patient support to ensure children with a wide range of complex medical needs receive the right care at the right time. Working alongside physicians, behavioral health professionals, pharmacies, and multidisciplinary care teams, you'll serve as an important clinical resource for patients and families while promoting safe, coordinated care across the ambulatory setting.

As an Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:

  • Providing telephonic triage using evidence-based clinical protocols, nursing judgment, and organizational guidelines to assess patient symptoms and determine the appropriate level of care
  • Evaluating the severity and urgency of patient concerns while recognizing situations requiring immediate intervention or escalation to emergency services
  • Providing patients and families with clear clinical guidance, education, and recommendations within the RN scope of practice
  • Coordinating care with physicians, behavioral health teams, pharmacies, and other departments to promote continuity and timely access to services
  • Scheduling urgent, same-day, and follow-up appointments based on clinical assessment, patient needs, and provider recommendations
  • Coordinating prior authorizations and communicating denials, clinical requirements, or necessary treatment changes to providers for timely resolution
  • Providing direct clinical nursing support within physiatry clinics, including assisting with botulinum toxin (Botox) procedures
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of patient assessments, triage encounters, interventions, education, and follow-up within the electronic medical record
  • Providing clinical guidance and support to medical assistants and other team members while promoting safe, efficient ambulatory care
  • Managing multiple patient needs and competing priorities while maintaining compassionate communication and a strong focus on patient safety

This role might be for you if:

  • Strong clinical judgment allows you to confidently assess patient concerns and determine the appropriate next steps
  • You are comfortable making nursing decisions in a telephonic environment where careful listening and assessment are essential
  • You enjoy educating patients and families and helping them navigate complex healthcare needs
  • You thrive in a fast-paced ambulatory setting where organization, prioritization, and adaptability are important
  • Clear, compassionate communication defines how you interact with children, families, providers, and colleagues
  • You enjoy coordinating across multiple disciplines to ensure patients receive timely and seamless care
  • You are comfortable supporting children with a wide variety of complex medical needs
  • Patient safety, evidence-based practice, and delivering an exceptional patient and family experience are central to your nursing practice

To be considered for this Ambulatory Care RN opportunity, you must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider certification is required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, along with previous pediatric nursing and/or ambulatory care experience. Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound clinical decisions using established triage protocols and nursing judgment. Comfort working with children with a wide range of complex medical needs and providing both telephonic and in-person clinical support is essential to success in this role.
