Job Overview: The Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS in the Microbiology Laboratory performs complex laboratory testing on clinical specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases,

The MLS applies professional knowledge, technical skills, and established protocols to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely test results,

This role contributes directly to patient care and supports infection prevention efforts through quality microbiological analysis

Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree in medical laboratory science preferred,

Which would normally be obtained through a formal four-year college/university academic program,

Registry with a recognized board of registry for medical technology, such as American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred,

Successful completion of all Orientation Programs: Preferred

Certifications and Licenses required if applicable

Essential Functions:

Performs microbiological testing on a variety of specimens e,

g,

, blood, urine, respiratory, wound, stool, including cultures, smears, PCR, and antigen testing,

Work in other core-lab areas as directed,

Conducts Gram stains, acid-fast stains, fungal stains, and parasitology testing as required,

Identifies bacterial, fungal, and other microbial pathogens using manual and automated methods e,

, MALDI-TOF, Cepheid GeneXpert, Biofire, etc,

Performs antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interprets results according to CLSI guidelines,

Reviews and validate test results, identifying and troubleshooting issues and unusual findings,

Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, including quality control and calibration procedures,

Utilizes the Laboratory Information System LIS for specimen tracking, result entry, and documentation,

Participates in laboratory quality assurance programs, including proficiency testing and internal audits,

Follows all safety, infection control, and biosafety protocols, including proper handling of infectious agents and use of PPE,

Assists in training new staff and students and participates in continuing education activities,

Communicates effectively with physicians, infection preventionists, and other healthcare professionals regarding critical or unusual results,

Assists in maintaining laboratory inventory by restocking supplies and preparing media or reagents as directed,

Working weekends and holidays as needed,

Must meet requirements of the ADA

Moderate amounts of sitting, standing or walking,

Occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects weighing up to 20 pounds
