Job Overview:

The Transplant Procurement Coordinator is a registered nurse trained in the evaluation of deceased donor organ offers, waitlist review, patient selection, post-transplant patient management and donor-recipient matching. The ability to coordinate, plan, and follow-up organ offers, procurement schedules, organ perfusion/organ transport, and timely communication with patients, Transplant Nephrologists, transplant surgeons, Transplant APPs/other team members as well as hospital OR personnel and Logistics/Bed Management is required. Functions to effectively review organ offers and maximize acceptance of organs for transplantation in compliance with local, regional, and national policies, in a responsible and professional manner. This position is 100% pre-transplant work.

To be considered for this Transplant Procurement Coordinator, RN opportunity, you must hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse license in good standing and a current American Heart Association BLS certification. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is strongly preferred. Clinical experience in a Medical-Surgical Unit, Emergency Room, ICU, OPO and/or Transplantation preferred. Additionally, certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator (CCTC) or Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) certification is preferred, and comfortable with electronic medical record systems (EMR) like EPIC. 

  • The ability to apply knowledge of the Organ Procurement Transplant Network (OPTN) and Centers for Medicate/Medicaid Services (CMS) Conditions of Participation (CoP) for RWJBH Transplant Programs Policy and Procedures is required to ensure hospital and transplant program adherence to all regulations.
  • Receives all organ offers through the OPTN Donor Net Online Portal, requiring the disposition of an organ offer to include an acceptance or turn down with refusal codes within 60 minutes of the electronic offer. Responds to all incoming calls from all external customers appropriately and role models behaviors of excellence in all interactions.
  • Understand and communicate effectively waiver information on applicable organ offers, understanding the type of waiver, and implication for payment of the organ.
  • Presents critical aspects of the organ offered to the transplant physician and/or transplant surgeon, focusing on donor history, hospital course, infections, medications, major treatment intervention, laboratory review including serology, and blood type.
  • Identifies and effectively communicates to clarify information between the offering Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) and the OPTN to obtain complete clinical, psychosocial, infection disease, laboratory and logistical information on the organ donor and specific organ offer as needed.
  • Provides advanced patient selection assistance to the transplant physician and/or transplant surgeon and assists in reviewing, screening, selecting, and recommending transplant candidates based on organ specific criteria.
  • Coordinating the transplant event process, which includes patient hospital admission set up, clinical team notification to include surgery, operating room, organ pumping lab (if ordered by transplant physician), and other hospital-based specialties/services as needed, may be in conjunction with hospital logistic department support. Coordinates logistics of procurement team and organ transport when applicable.
  • Completes necessary documentation and transplant team communication for donor/recipient virtual and/or physical crossmatches/compatibility reports etc. through NJ Sharing Network.
  • Performs a nursing assessment, including the use of current checklists, to assess potential candidates to determine readiness, and medical, psychosocial, and financial suitability to undergo transplantation at time of organ offer. Effectively manages follow-up phone communication with patients.
