Director of Rehabilitation – RWJBarnabas Health
At RWJBarnabas Health, Rehab Directors play an essential leadership role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered rehabilitation services across Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology. As a member of the rehabilitation leadership team, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Rehab Department while supporting clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, staff development, operational efficiency, and continuous quality improvement. Working collaboratively with hospital leadership, rehabilitation professionals, physicians, vendors, students, patients, and interdisciplinary team members, you will help ensure that rehabilitation services are delivered safely, effectively, and in accordance with established standards of care. A typical day for a Rehab Director may include:
• Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Rehabilitation Department, including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology services.
• Leading the onboarding, orientation, training, supervision, mentorship, performance improvement, and evaluation processes for departmental staff.
• Maintaining accurate records of essential staff documentation, including licensure, certifications, competencies, training, and other required employment records.
• Overseeing efficient staffing, scheduling, and coordination of rehabilitation services to support appropriate patient access, department productivity, and quality care delivery.
• Developing, monitoring, and managing departmental budgets while ensuring responsible spending and appropriate utilization of financial and operational resources.
• Preparing for and participating in organizational audits, regulatory reviews, and facility accreditation requirements, including DNV-related standards and surveys.
• Providing statistical, financial, operational, and performance updates to hospital Leadership, including recommendations, corrective actions, and action plans to address identified opportunities.
• Developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating departmental policies and procedures to maintain regulatory compliance, improve operational efficiency, and support high-quality patient care.
• Developing and monitoring departmental quality assurance initiatives, quality metrics, performance indicators, and performance improvement activities.
• Serving as the clinical site coordinator for student programs and supporting relationships with academic institutions and clinical education programs.
• Serving as a liaison between the Rehabilitation Department and PT/OT outpatient vendors to support effective communication, coordination, and continuity of services.
• Evaluating, treating, and re-evaluating admitted patients as clinically and departmentally needed while adhering to established standards of care and professional practice.
• Ensuring compliance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and scheduling guidelines.
• Attending and actively participating in departmental, hospital, and other leadership meetings as required.
• Promoting and fostering a healthy, collaborative, respectful, and supportive workforce environment while modeling and reinforcing organizational values.
• Supporting continuous professional development, staff engagement, clinical excellence, and evidence-based rehabilitation practices.
• Performing other duties as assigned while representing RWJBarnabas Health with professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to exceptional patient care.

To Be Considered:
To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:
• Education: Graduate degree in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
• Licensure: Current and unrestricted New Jersey Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy license.
• Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Successful completion of all required RWJBarnabas Health orientation programs required.
• Preferred Qualifications: Active membership in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) preferred. Clinical Instructor (CI) Certification preferred.
• Experience: Previous clinical experience in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy, with demonstrated leadership, supervisory, or management experience in a rehabilitation or healthcare setting preferred.
• Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of rehabilitation operations; staff supervision and development; staffing and scheduling; budgeting and financial management; quality assurance and performance improvement; regulatory and accreditation requirements; policy and procedure development; clinical education; interdisciplinary collaboration; and patient-centered rehabilitation practices.
• Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams, develop staff, manage operational priorities, communicate effectively with Leadership, and implement action plans that improve quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
• Schedule: Ability to work a schedule based on departmental and organizational needs and participate in required hospital and departmental meetings, regulatory activities, continuing education, and professional development opportunities.
