Monitoring Technician

At Monmouth Medical Center, our Monitoring Technicians play a critical role in supporting safe and effective patient care by continuously monitoring cardiac rhythms, recognizing significant rhythm changes, and immediately notifying RNs and clinicians of changes that may require clinical attention. Working closely with patients, families, nurses, physicians, and hospital departments, Monitoring Technicians help ensure accurate telemetry monitoring, timely communication, proper documentation, and reliable operation of cardiac monitoring equipment. We believe our Monitoring Technicians are an essential part of the care team, supporting patient safety, clinical decision-making, and continuity of care through attention to detail, technical competency, and compassionate service.

As a Monitoring Technician, a typical day might include the following:

• Maintaining ongoing, high-level surveillance of patients' cardiac rhythms and promptly notifying RNs and clinicians of significant rate or rhythm changes in accordance with provider orders.
• Monitoring cardiac rhythms through telemetry and demonstrating competency with full-disclosure monitoring systems.
• Recognizing and appropriately communicating significant cardiac rhythm changes, including Class III arrhythmias and other clinically important rhythm abnormalities.
• Measuring, interpreting, and documenting all required elements of cardiac rhythm strips and ensuring appropriate documentation is placed in the patient's chart.
• Recognizing the clinical significance of prolonged PR intervals, widened QRS complexes, prolonged QT intervals, and changes in the ST/T segments, including ST/T elevations and depressions.
• Setting high and low cardiac alarm limits according to physician or provider orders.
• Applying telemetry transmitters correctly using the five-lead system and ensuring monitoring equipment is functioning appropriately.
• Initiating and discontinuing telemetry monitoring equipment when patients are admitted, transferred, or discharged.
• Delivering telemetry and transport monitoring equipment to inpatient units as needed.
• Preparing patients for telemetry monitoring and providing appropriate education and instruction related to monitoring equipment.
• Communicating clearly and promptly with nursing and clinical staff regarding changes in patients' cardiac rhythms or other monitoring concerns.
• Providing accurate shift-to-shift reports to ensure continuity of monitoring and communication.
• Answering telephone and Vocera communications and accurately receiving and relaying information from patient care units and healthcare providers.
• Performing clerical responsibilities associated with patient admissions, discharges, monitoring, and documentation of patient information within the Central Telemetry department.
• Maintaining accurate records and completing all required documentation related to cardiac monitoring and patient care.
• Developing positive and cooperative relationships with nursing staff, physicians, clinicians, patients, families, and visitors.
• Introducing yourself to patients and families, protecting patient privacy, and demonstrating tact, compassion, sensitivity, and professionalism in all interactions.
• Responding appropriately to questions and requests from healthcare providers and clinical staff.
• Maintaining and stocking designated telemetry and transport monitoring equipment to support department operations.
• Identifying missing, damaged, or malfunctioning transmitters and cardiac monitoring equipment and notifying the Clinical Director as appropriate.
• Replacing defective equipment when appropriate and reporting equipment failures to Biomedical Engineering.
• Serving as a resource for Central Telemetry and clinical areas by assisting with training, troubleshooting, and proper use of monitoring equipment.
• Orienting and mentoring new staff members and supporting competency development within the department.
• Demonstrating flexibility and professionalism in response to unexpected changes in patient volume, emergencies, staffing needs, and schedule changes.
• Attending hospital-wide education and competency programs and completing all required unit-based competencies.
• Following unit and departmental scheduling requirements and guidelines.
• Performing responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Monmouth Medical Center.
• Performing other duties as requested or assigned by management.

To Be Considered for This Opportunity, You Must Have:

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of all required orientation programs.
• Successful completion of required hospital-wide education, competency programs, and unit-based competencies.
• Telemetry experience and/or successful completion of a cardiac dysrhythmia course is preferred.
• The ability to demonstrate competency in cardiac rhythm monitoring, interpretation, documentation, and communication.
• The ability to recognize significant cardiac rhythm changes and promptly notify the appropriate RN or clinician.
• The ability to properly apply and manage five-lead telemetry monitoring equipment.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• The ability to accurately document patient and monitoring information.
• The ability to work collaboratively with nursing, clinical, administrative, and support teams.
• The ability to meet the physical and functional requirements of the position in accordance with applicable ADA requirements.
• The ability to work in a generally clean and comfortable healthcare environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors, communicable diseases, and mechanical or electrical hazards.
