Our Mental Health Workers work collaboratively to provide essential direct patient care, clinical support, and crisis intervention across RWJBarnabas Health. By closely monitoring physical and emotional well-being, our psychiatric team proactively engages vulnerable patients to provide connection, safety, and support. We view our team members as a critical component of the behavioral health care plan and recognize the positive impact they have on the healing journey of our patients. A Typical Day
As a Mental Health Worker, a typical day might include the following:
- Providing standard nursing care delegated by the Registered Nurse, including taking and recording vital signs.
- Performing essential clinical tasks including venipuncture (drawing blood), specimen collection, and EKGs.
- Assists patients with daily living activities, including eating, dressing, bathing, and safe escort throughout the facility.
- Contributing to the formulation, implementation, and updating of patient care and treatment plans.
- Planning, leading, and participating in therapeutic, recreational, group, and community meetings.
- Participating in patient admission, orientation, and transfer processes while maintaining a safe unit environment.
- Serving as a preceptor by assisting in the orientation of incoming employees and behavioral health students.

To Be Considered
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Behavioral Health, or a related field; OR an active AIMS MHA certification. (A minimum of 5 years of behavioral health care experience is acceptable in lieu of a degree).
- Active American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support) certification, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire.
- Strong baseline of interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills for patient documentation.
- Prior experience with psychiatric or substance abuse patients and non-violent crisis intervention is preferred.
