Lead Medical Technologist

As a Lead Medical Technologist, you will play a critical role in supporting the daily operations of the Core Laboratory and ensuring accurate, timely, and high-quality laboratory testing. You will provide technical leadership, coordinate laboratory functions and workflow, support staffing and scheduling needs, monitor quality control and preventive maintenance activities, troubleshoot specimens and instrumentation, and collaborate with pathologists, nursing staff, medical staff, and other hospital departments to promote safe and efficient patient care.

A typical day for a Lead Medical Technologist may include:

• Provide technical leadership and coordinate daily functions and activities within the Core Laboratory, including workflow, maintenance, quality control review, specimen troubleshooting, and instrument troubleshooting.

• Perform routine, complex, and specialized laboratory testing while ensuring accurate, timely, and reliable patient results in accordance with established policies and procedures.

• Serve as a technical resource for laboratory staff and provide guidance regarding testing procedures, instrumentation, workflow, quality requirements, and troubleshooting.

• Acquire and maintain comprehensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, including operation, maintenance requirements, troubleshooting procedures, quality control performance, and acceptable operating ranges.

• Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure optimal performance and uninterrupted laboratory operations.

• Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities, prepare quality control and quality assurance data, and identify opportunities for corrective action and process improvement.

• Review critical laboratory reports and ensure compliance with established critical results notification policies and procedures.

• Assist in preparing biweekly, monthly, weekend, holiday, and other staffing schedules as needed to ensure adequate laboratory coverage.

• Help coordinate staffing assignments and workflow to support efficient laboratory operations and appropriate coverage.

• Review and monitor preventive maintenance records and ensure required maintenance activities are completed and documentation remains readily accessible.

• Monitor specimen handling and reporting practices and assist with resolving specimen and testing issues to maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory results.

• Monitor the handling and reporting of CAP proficiency testing and ensure appropriate review, documentation, and corrective action when required.

• Maintain accurate documentation of testing, quality control activities, proficiency testing, equipment maintenance, corrective actions, and other laboratory activities.

• Assist in maintaining current laboratory Procedure Manuals by reviewing procedures at least biannually and coordinating required revisions, signatures, and dates with the pathologist and administrative director.

• Ensure laboratory procedures, quality practices, and documentation remain consistent with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements, including CLIA and CAP standards.

• Monitor laboratory inventory levels for chemicals, reagents, controls, and other supplies and communicate ordering needs to designated personnel to support uninterrupted laboratory operations.

• Assist with budget preparation and participate in the evaluation of capital equipment and laboratory technology needs.

• Educate, train, and orient staff and new employees regarding instrumentation, laboratory procedures, workflow, quality requirements, and safe work practices.

• Support staff competency, technical development, and adherence to established laboratory procedures and standards.

• Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory staff and assist with troubleshooting complex testing, specimen, workflow, and instrumentation issues.

• Consult with pathologists and laboratory leadership regarding technical issues, quality concerns, testing procedures, instrumentation, and other laboratory matters as appropriate.

• Communicate and collaborate effectively with medical staff, nursing personnel, patient-related hospital departments, ancillary services, patients, families, and visitors as appropriate.

• Maintain positive working relationships within and outside the laboratory to promote effective communication, teamwork, and high-quality patient care.

• Follow established laboratory safety protocols and infection prevention practices when handling biohazard specimens and performing laboratory testing.

• Participate in competency assessments, staff education, quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and other activities that support professional development and laboratory excellence.

• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required to support the needs of the laboratory and the organization.

To be considered for this Lead Medical Technologist opportunity, you must:

• Have a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a Bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science from an accredited institution.

• Have two years of supervisory experience preferred.

• MLS (ASCP) certification preferred.

• Demonstrate knowledge of clinical laboratory testing, instrumentation, quality control, preventive maintenance, and laboratory workflow.

• Demonstrate the ability to provide technical leadership, guidance, education, and support to laboratory staff.

• Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with laboratory staff, pathologists, physicians, nursing personnel, and other hospital departments.

• Demonstrate the ability to support laboratory scheduling, quality assurance activities, inventory management, staff education, and regulatory and accreditation requirements.

• Be able to safely handle biohazard specimens and work effectively in a clinical laboratory environment.
