Ultrasound Technologist - RWJBarnabas Health
Ultrasound Technologists play an essential role in supporting patient diagnosis and treatment through the use of advanced sonographic imaging technology. Working closely with physicians and healthcare teams, technologists perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations, produce high-quality images, document findings, and ensure patient safety throughout the imaging process. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, critical thinking, and a commitment to delivering outstanding patient care.
A Typical Day for an Ultrasound Technologist May Include:
- Performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations using specialized imaging equipment to assist physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment.
- Producing and analyzing high-quality ultrasound images to support accurate clinical decision-making.
- Entering patient demographics, examination information, and required measurements into ultrasound reporting systems.
- Assisting physicians during minor surgical and interventional procedures when appropriate.
- Explaining procedures to patients and providing reassurance while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pathophysiology to obtain accurate diagnostic images.
- Operating ultrasound equipment, including Duplex Dopplers, Matrix Imaging systems, color imaging technology, and related diagnostic systems.
- Performing daily equipment calibration, quality assurance checks, and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
- Maintaining adequate inventory and supply levels within the department.
- Accurately documenting procedures, findings, and patient information in accordance with departmental and regulatory requirements.
- Reporting identified safety concerns, hazardous conditions, medical errors, and other quality-related issues in a timely manner.
- Following established clinical policies, protocols, and best practices to support high-quality patient care.
- Collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

To Be Considered:
- Graduate of an accredited Ultrasound/Sonography program.
- One to two years of ultrasound experience preferred.
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification required.
- Strong knowledge of gross and sectional anatomy.
- Knowledge of physiology, pathology, and pathophysiology.
- Proficiency in operating a variety of ultrasound equipment, including Duplex Dopplers, Matrix Imaging systems, color imaging technology, computers, and ultrasound machines.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations and operate imaging equipment safely and accurately.
- Strong organizational, documentation, and patient care skills.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including partial-day shifts based on departmental and operational needs.
