Chief Radiation Therapist – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Chief Therapist reports to the director of radiation Oncology and to the Chairman on all clinical issues supervises and is responsible for all functions and areas, which encompass the radiation Oncology department. In the director’s absence, they will assume the responsibilities of the Director as needed. The Chief Therapist will insure that all aspects of the department are implemented in accordance with all regulatory standards and hospital policies. They will utilize sound judgement and independent thinking to handle complex and crisis situation; this includes: reception, registration, scheduling, billing, simulations dosimetry and treatments.

A typical day for a Radiation Therapist may include:

• Facilitating smooth and efficient operation of all areas and all personnel under direct supervision, including planning and organizing the day’s work. Management of daily departmental operations including reception, registration, scheduling, billing, simulations and treatments.

Making assignment of personnel to coordinate activities for all personnel with the rest of the department. Responsible for scheduling of all staff including technical, clerical and nursing to assure adequate coverage of all shifts.

• Assisting in the instruction of student technologists

• Orienting students through the file room

• Able to evaluate student performance and fill out observation forms.

Assuring that all treatments performed in the department listed below are properly and efficiently performed and coordinated between simulation, dosimetry and treatment. The studies are then matched, collated, and organized for Radiation Oncologists review. Provides assistance to all clinicians, physicists, nurses, dosimetrists and staff for training on all computer systems.

• Follow the prescriptions of the radiation Oncologist to work out a treatment plan that delivers the precise radiation dosage to the diseased area while minimizing the dose to unaffected tissues.

• Identify surface anatomy and localize treatment volume using simulators and/or CT scanners.

• Calculate the precise radiation dose required, generate dosage distribution on a planning computer system, and record details of procedures to be utilized on treatment units.

• Submiting detailed treatment plans to Radiation Oncologist for approval

• Explaining procedures to patients

• Positioning and stabilize patients in preparation for treatment delivery

• Monitoring the patient carefully during the treatment

• Operating  the treatment machines, ancillary equipment and computer verification systems to deliver the planned treatment accurately.

• Observing quality assurance procedures and record dosage and other relevant details on patients’’ record sheets

• Advising the patient about self-care procedures for radiation treatment side effects, or refer the patient for further assistance.

• Supervising and train students allocated from universities in the practical aspects of radiation therapy.

• Initiating employee evaluation reports. Recommends promotions, discipline, and other administrative action. Reporting problems relating to staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, and transfers, and recommends action in all personnel matters for those personnel under direct supervision. Responsible for writing and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

• In the director’s absence will assume the responsibilities of the director as needed. Will utilize sound judgement and independent thinking to handle complex and crisis situations.

• Developing and maintaining working knowledge of the operation of the various computer systems. Insuring prompt and efficient use of all systems including VARIS/VISION, ECLIPSE, RADIONICS, AQ-SIM, PACS, TDS, and interfaces.

• Maintaining consistency in interpretation and implementation of hospital policies and procedures including administration and human resources policies with all staff members.

• Taking control of departmental problems, patient, or staff related and solve them availing delegation to staff.

• Scheduling on a regular basis time for meals and breaks, exceptions will only be for patient related issues. The director is responsible for assisting and assuring compliance.

• Providing consistent direction and role modeling in the workplace so the staff can be comfortable interacting with their super visor. Positively reinforcing staff by use of praise and pother techniques.

• Motivating the staff to engage in participating in solving departmental issues, performance improvement and patient satisfaction.

• Maintaining the computer systems. Assists the Systems analyst with the in servicing of the staff to the systems. Arranging adequate release time. Counseling employee’s not utilizing the system according to the standard operating procedures. Maintaining all supplies. Orderuing materials needed to run the department.

• Applying knowledge of growth and development over the life span.

• Applying the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit, i.e., infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

• Assessing data reflective of each patient’s status and interpreting information needed in order to identify each patient’s age requirements relative to his or her age specific health care needs.|

• Able to work over scheduled time when required

• Able to assist in the performance of other duties within the department

To be considered for this Chief Therapist opportunity, you must:

• Graduate of Accredited Radiation Oncology Technology Program.
• Valid NJ State License as a Radiation Oncology Therapist.
• Registered or Registry eligible by the A.R.R.T.
• Successful completion of all orientation programs.
• Maintains required BLS Heart Saver/Health Care Provider through American Heart Association
• High School graduate or equivalent
• Baccalaureate degree preferred with emphasis in the sciences.
• Five years practical hospital experience necessary with radiation Oncology supervisory experience.
• Computer background, office routine familiarity and strong knowledge of medical terminology.
