Job Summary:

Food Hub Director – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, Food Hub Directors play an essential leadership role in overseeing the newly launched RWJBH Food Hub in Newark, NJ. This position leads a multi-use community space focused on local food aggregation, nutrition education, social service access, workforce opportunity, and community connectivity. The Food Hub Director provides strategic and operational leadership while bringing together healthcare, local farmers, growers, makers, community organizations, and other partners to advance food and nutrition security across the communities served. This position works closely with internal and external stakeholders and serves as a primary point of contact for activities associated with the Food Hub, while supporting RWJBarnabas Health's commitment to innovation, community health, and continuous quality improvement.

A typical day for a Food Hub Director may include:

• Leading the daily operations of the Harvest Food Hub and ensuring the facility operates efficiently, safely, and in alignment with organizational goals

• Providing leadership and oversight to multidisciplinary team members, including Registered Dietitians, Community Health Workers, Community Engagement specialists, culinary staff, and aggregation center staff

• Providing guidance and operational oversight for employees of the partnering aggregation organization sharing the Food Hub space

• Leading a team that includes approximately 5 Harvest FTEs and 8–10 warehouse and distribution FTEs

• Collaborating with the Food Hub's produce and food aggregation center and approximately 40 farming partners throughout New Jersey and the surrounding region

• Building and maintaining relationships with community organizations, vendors, regional farmers, businesses, nonprofit organizations, schools, senior homes and facilities, faith-based organizations, and government stakeholders

• Serving as a primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders and coordinating activities across multiple industries and community partners

• Collecting, analyzing, and reporting operational and program data to support monthly departmental and state reporting requirements

• Overseeing communications and marketing activities for the community center and ensuring messaging aligns with its mission, vision, and RWJBarnabas Health practices

• Managing the Food Hub budget, financial reporting, and operational resources

• Identifying, developing, and maintaining opportunities to generate revenue and support the long-term sustainability of the Food Hub

• Ensuring compliance with applicable local and state agency requirements and reporting standards

• Overseeing food safety practices and compliance, including ServSafe, HACCP, OSHA, and FDA Food Safety Modernization Act requirements

• Creating, implementing, and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the facility

• Identifying opportunities to improve operational processes, service delivery, and overall Food Hub performance through continuous quality improvement initiatives

• Collaborating with aggregation center leadership to promote cohesion, shared goals, and effective coordination across the Food Hub

• Supporting the Food Hub's role as an innovative model for upstream food and nutrition security within RWJBarnabas Health, both locally and nationally

• Promoting an environment that connects healthcare with local food systems and expands access to healthy food and workforce opportunities for community members

• Demonstrating compassionate, visionary, and solution-driven leadership while fostering a professional and collaborative team environment

• Performing other leadership and operational responsibilities within the scope of the position to support the Food Hub's mission and community impact

To be considered for this Food Hub Director opportunity:

• You have a background in public health, operations, business, or a related field

• A bachelor's degree is preferred but not required

• You have strong organizational, operational, interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills

• You have experience working with community partners, stakeholders, vendors, or other external organizations

• You have demonstrated experience leading teams and coordinating multidisciplinary operations

• You have knowledge of food safety practices and regulatory requirements

• You hold ServSafe Manager-level certification or an equivalent credential

• You demonstrate the ability to manage budgets, reporting requirements, operational metrics, and compliance activities

• You have the ability to develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and support continuous quality improvement initiatives

• You demonstrate professionalism, empathy, accountability, and a commitment to serving the community

• You are able to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders

• You are able to work collaboratively with Food Hub staff, aggregation partners, local farmers, community organizations, and RWJBarnabas Health leadership

• You are able to work expanded hours as needed to support the operational requirements of the Food Hub
