Pharmacy Technician - RWJBarnabas Health
At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex technical, clerical, and compounding procedures according to strict medical, legal, and professional pharmaceutical standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during medication preparation, ensuring accurate inventory maintenance, delivering age-specific care support, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the multidisciplinary pharmacy department.
A typical day for a Pharmacy Technician may include:
- Prepares sterile intravenous admixtures, clearly explains the process, and positions pediatric medications for safe and accurate patient delivery
- Operates automated dispensing cabinets, packaging machines, laminar airflow hoods, and computing systems necessary to ensure a safe and accurate medication distribution procedure
- Assist pharmacists and clinical teams during procurement by placing supplier orders, unpacking inventory, and verifying delivery invoices
- Sets up sterile trays and unit-dose equipment following aseptic technique, handles hazardous or standard materials, and reviews inventories to assist with stock rotation
- Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts packaging systems, and reports equipment failures or invoice discrepancies immediately to leadership and suppliers
- Monitors and calls out automated inventory levels, alerting the pharmacy management team immediately to any changes in stock or expired medication conditions
- Utilizes compounding software and hospital databases to enter accurately identified and verified records of mixtures, and retrieves old patient transfer logs when necessary
- Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy protocols including pediatric math calculations, sterile compounding guidelines, and generic-trade name relationships
- Collaborates professionally in a hospital and nursing unit environment, delivering controlled substances and working in close cooperation with medical and technical staff
- Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures and frequent interruptions

To be considered for this Pharmacy Technician opportunity:
- Graduate with a High School Diploma or equivalent credential
- Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Must hold and maintain active registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national certification is required within 6 months of employment
- Ability to perform precise pharmaceutical and pediatric calculations for compounding and dispensing workflows
- Proven capability to prepare and label non-sterile extemporaneous products and IV sterile admixtures using aseptic technique
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace dependability, arriving on time and attending daily departmental huddles
- Strong professional demeanor with a proven track record of showing respect and appreciation for a diverse environment
- Prior experience working as a hospital pharmacy technician with dedicated cleanroom experience is highly preferred
