Speech-Language Pathologist – Children's Specialized Hospital

Our Speech-Language Pathologists play an essential role in helping children with communication, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing disorders achieve greater independence and participate more fully in daily life. Working collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, nursing, therapists, and other members of the interdisciplinary team, our Speech-Language Pathologists provide comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment designed to address each child’s unique strengths, needs, and goals.

Through skilled assessment, evidence-based intervention, family education, care coordination, and collaboration with healthcare, education, and community professionals, our Speech-Language Pathologists help children maximize their communication and functional abilities. We view our Speech-Language Pathologists as key members of the care team who bring clinical expertise, creativity, collaboration, and a family-centered approach to every patient interaction.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, a typical day might include the following:

• Providing direct patient care services to children exhibiting communication, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and/or swallowing disorders.

• Delivering effective therapeutic services that are relevant to the pediatric population served while maintaining current knowledge of evidence-based techniques, practices, and clinical approaches.

• Conducting comprehensive speech-language evaluations that accurately and efficiently identify patient strengths, needs, and areas of functional concern.

• Selecting, administering, and interpreting appropriate formal and informal assessment procedures based on the patient’s age, developmental level, diagnosis, communication needs, and preferred mode of communication.

• Communicating evaluation findings, clinical impressions, recommendations, and treatment plans effectively in both verbal and written formats.

• Developing individualized treatment plans and therapeutic goals based on evaluation findings, patient needs, family priorities, and functional outcomes.

• Providing skilled intervention to address communication, speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing needs within the scope of practice.

• Monitoring patient progress and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment approaches, modifying interventions as appropriate to meet changing patient needs.

• Completing required basic competencies for the populations currently served in accordance with Speech and Hearing Department competency criteria and hospital competency requirements.

• Communicating effectively with patients, families, nursing staff, therapists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to support coordinated and patient-centered care.

• Providing families and caregivers with education regarding evaluation findings, treatment strategies, home programs, communication supports, swallowing recommendations, and other appropriate interventions.

• Coordinating services with other health professionals and participating as an active member of the interdisciplinary team.

• Communicating job-specific clinical and operational concerns and actively participating in the development of appropriate solutions.

• Sharing information regarding speech-language evaluation techniques, treatment approaches, hospital procedures, and clinical practices with students, volunteers, Clinical Fellows (CFYs), and peers.

• Providing training and education to staff, students, volunteers, and community partners as requested and in accordance with applicable state licensing requirements.

• Participating in departmental projects and initiatives that support department and hospital goals, priorities, and mission.

• Seeking opportunities to maintain productivity and meet established volume expectations, including assisting elsewhere within the department when cancellations, no-shows, or low census create opportunities to support patient care and departmental needs.

• Completing clinical documentation and other written work accurately and within established timeframes, consistent with applicable professional and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) standards.

• Meeting established annual productivity and volume expectations while maintaining quality, safety, and patient-centered care.

• Maintaining professional competencies and pursuing continuing education opportunities to support ongoing clinical development and licensure requirements.

• Participating in quality improvement initiatives and contributing ideas and solutions that support improved patient outcomes, clinical services, and departmental performance.

• Providing clinical education and guidance to graduate students and other learners as appropriate.

• Participating in clinical fellowship supervision and support as appropriate to qualifications and departmental needs.
