Mental Health Worker, Psychiatry Residential Services
In the Department of Psychiatry Residential Services, Mental Health Workers become part of a compassionate, recovery-focused environment dedicated to supporting adults living in a community-based residential setting. Working with a team of behavioral health professionals, the Mental Health Worker helps support consumers diagnosed with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness while promoting stability, wellness, independence, and successful community living. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of consumers through patient support, motivational guidance, skills building, crisis recognition, medication supervision, and community integration. Mental Health Workers contribute to a safe, clean, therapeutic environment while helping consumers work toward their individualized recovery goals and transition to less supervised levels of housing.
A typical day for a Mental Health Worker, Psychiatry Residential Services may include:
Supporting adult consumers residing in a 15-bed community-based residential program who are diagnosed with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness
Providing compassionate, patient, and respectful support to consumers as they work toward individualized wellness and recovery goals
Assisting consumers in developing and strengthening skills needed for greater independence and successful community living
Providing case management support and helping consumers access appropriate services, resources, and community supports
Supervising and supporting medication routines in accordance with established program procedures and individual treatment plans
Providing skills-building support focused on daily living, independence, problem-solving, and other areas that promote recovery
Assisting consumers with community integration and encouraging appropriate participation in community activities and resources
Observing consumers for changes in behavior, mood, functioning, or overall presentation and communicating relevant concerns to the appropriate team members
Recognizing potential crises and applying appropriate interventions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and individualized support plans
Participating in in-depth training and ongoing competency development related to crisis identification, intervention, mental health support, and residential services
Working collaboratively with other Mental Health Workers and members of the behavioral health team to provide consistent and effective consumer support
Maintaining a clean, safe, structured, and therapeutic residential environment for consumers and staff
Supporting the department's mission of helping consumers maintain stability in the community and progress toward less supervised levels of housing
Encouraging consumers through patience, positive reinforcement, motivation, and respectful communication
Providing support that promotes dignity, independence, personal responsibility, and recovery
Following departmental policies, procedures, safety practices, and established methods of practice while performing assigned responsibilities
Demonstrating consistent commitment to High Reliability and the organization's Safety Together behaviors and tools
Communicating effectively with consumers, coworkers, supervisors, families, community providers, and other members of the care team
Maintaining appropriate documentation and completing assigned responsibilities in a timely and organized manner
Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned in accordance with departmental needs and program standards

You are comfortable working a consistent afternoon/evening schedule from Sunday through Thursday

You are prepared to work collaboratively with the residential services team and contribute to a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment.
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a mental health-related field. A valid, unrestricted New Jersey Driver's License is required. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification is preferred; certification will be provided if the candidate's current certificate is not active. Bilingual skills are appreciated. Candidates must possess strong communication, interpersonal, patience, and motivational skills and must be able to effectively support adults with serious and persistent mental health needs. In-depth training will be provided on site regarding crisis identification, appropriate interventions, medication supervision, skills building, community integration, and other responsibilities associated with residential behavioral health services.
