At RWJBarnabas Health, our Certified Nursing Assistants play an essential role in creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment for children and young adults with complex healthcare needs. As a Certified Nursing Assistant in Pediatric Long-Term Care at Children's Specialized Hospital, you'll provide compassionate, hands-on care to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic medical, developmental, and rehabilitation needs. Working under the direction of licensed nursing professionals, you'll support daily living activities, encourage developmental growth, and help patients maintain comfort, dignity, and independence. Through meaningful interactions with patients and families and collaboration with an interdisciplinary care team, you'll help create an environment where every child feels supported, valued, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), a typical day may include:
Assisting pediatric patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and oral care
Supporting meal preparation and setup, feeding assistance, hydration, and monitoring intake as directed by the nursing team
Assisting with patient positioning, turning, transfers, ambulation, and mobility activities using appropriate equipment and safe patient handling techniques
Providing individualized, age-appropriate care that supports each patient's developmental, physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs
Observing and reporting changes in patient condition, behavior, skin integrity, mobility, intake and output, and comfort to the licensed nurse
Measuring and documenting vital signs, height, weight, and other assigned patient observations in accordance with established procedures
Helping children participate in school, therapy sessions, recreational programs, and community activities when appropriate
Engaging patients in age-appropriate play, interaction, and activities that promote emotional well-being, social connection, and quality of life
Partnering with nurses, therapists, educators, families, and other interdisciplinary team members to support individualized care plans and patient goals
Maintaining a safe and comfortable care environment through consistent infection prevention practices, hand hygiene, and appropriate isolation precautions
Documenting care provided accurately and promptly while maintaining patient confidentiality and following organizational and regulatory requirements
Maintaining required certifications, completing ongoing education and competencies, and supporting additional patient care needs as assigned

You are committed to patient safety, infection prevention, cultural sensitivity, confidentiality, and family-centered care
To be considered for this Certified Nursing Assistant opportunity, you must hold a current Certified Long-Term Care Facility Nursing Assistant certification and be listed on the New Jersey Nurse Aide Registry. American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider Certification is required. Candidates must possess basic computer skills, with at least six months of nursing assistant or related patient care experience preferred. The ideal candidate demonstrates knowledge of basic nursing assistant practices, pediatric growth and development, infection prevention, safe patient handling, activities of daily living, and age-appropriate patient care. Strong communication, observation, documentation, time management, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with licensed nurses and interdisciplinary care teams. Candidates should be comfortable supporting infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with complex medical, developmental, and rehabilitation needs while maintaining a compassionate, culturally sensitive, and family-centered approach to care. This is a full-time, night shift opportunity supporting the Pediatric Long-Term Care department at Children's Specialized Hospital.
