At RWJBarnabas Health, our behavioral health support teams operate at the heart of a compassionate, multidisciplinary environment dedicated to transforming the patient experience. Joining our team means becoming part of a premier academic healthcare network that values teamwork, excellence, and a shared commitment to delivering high-quality, safe clinical services across our communities. We are seeking a dedicated Licensed Social Worker (LSW) to provide comprehensive clinical interventions within our behavioral health services. If you are an empathetic advocate eager to combine evidence-based therapy with structured discharge planning, we invite you to build a rewarding career on our psychiatric care team.

A Typical Day
As a Licensed Social Worker, a typical day might include the following:

  • Biopsychosocial Intakes & Assessments: Assessing patient needs through clinical interviews, thorough chart/history reviews, and detailed psychosocial assessments to define initial and revised treatment plans.
  • Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: Formulating and executing crisis-oriented individual treatment, cognitive behavioral interventions, and specialized group or family psychotherapy sessions aimed at achieving patient goals.
  • Multidisciplinary Treatment Planning: Collaborating closely with the interdisciplinary care team to integrate clinical assessment data into comprehensive, actionable treatment plans.
  • Care Coordination & Discharge Navigation: Developing and implementing strategic discharge plans, coordinating hospital-to-hospital transfers, and partnering with external community agencies to ensure a seamless post-acute continuity of care.
  • Family Support & Psychoeducation: Interpreting the nature of illnesses and prescribed courses of treatment to patients and families, facilitating family conferences, and delivering professional psychoeducational programming.
  • Clinical Documentation Excellence: Maintaining legally compliant, precise documentation regarding patient assessments, active treatment protocols, milestones, outcomes, and after-care plans in the medical record.

This Role Might Be For You If:

  • You are deeply passionate about creating a welcoming, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for psychiatric patients and their families.
  • You excel under pressure, maintain an exceptional professional demeanor, and stay current on acute crisis intervention, safety protocols, and psychiatric de-escalation practices.
  • You take operational pride in documentation excellence, ensuring progress notes and treatment milestones are thoroughly logged in compliance with regulatory and facility guidelines.
  • You thrive in a highly collaborative team framework alongside nurses, physicians, program directors, and supportive social service agencies.
  • You believe that true clinical healing, short length-of-stay optimization, and long-term stabilization are strengthened through empathy, open communication, and active coaching.

To Be Considered:

  • Education: Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) or a closely related human services graduate field from an accredited institutional program is required.
  • Licensure: An active state board license as a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in good standing in the State of New Jersey is strictly required.
  • Experience: Prior post-graduate clinical social work experience working directly within a behavioral health, substance abuse, or psychiatric treatment setting is required. Two (2) years of experience as an LSW is highly preferred.
