Early Intervention Speech Pathologist – Children's Specialized Hospital, RWJBarnabas Health
At Children's Specialized Hospital, part of RWJBarnabas Health, Early Intervention Speech Pathologists play a vital role in helping infants and toddlers with communication and developmental delays reach their fullest potential during the most critical years of growth. As a member of our Early Intervention team, you will partner with families and interdisciplinary professionals to provide family-centered, evidence-based speech-language pathology services in children's natural environments, including homes and childcare settings. You will empower parents and caregivers through coaching, education, and individualized intervention strategies, helping them incorporate communication-enhancing techniques into everyday routines and interactions with their children. Working collaboratively with families and other professionals, you will support the development of functional communication skills while promoting each child's overall growth and development. Joining Children's Specialized Hospital means becoming part of an organization committed to clinical excellence, innovation, and providing therapists with opportunities for professional growth while making a meaningful impact on children and families throughout New Jersey.
A typical day for an Early Intervention Speech Pathologist may include:
• Conducting comprehensive developmental and communication evaluations in children's natural environments to identify strengths, communication needs, developmental concerns, and functional outcomes.
• Developing, implementing, and updating Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) in collaboration with families, service coordinators, and interdisciplinary team members, ensuring outcomes are measurable, functional, and aligned with family priorities.
• Providing evidence-based speech-language pathology interventions that support receptive and expressive language, social communication, play skills, early communication development, and other areas of functional communication.
• Coaching parents and caregivers by modeling developmentally appropriate communication strategies that can be naturally incorporated into daily routines, family activities, and interactions with their children.
• Collaborating with occupational therapists, physical therapists, developmental interventionists, service coordinators, and other professionals to promote coordinated, family-centered care and support each child's developmental progress.
• Utilizing the New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards as a common framework for understanding and communicating developmentally appropriate expectations for infants and toddlers.
• Demonstrating knowledge of discipline-specific assessment tools, developmental checklists, and evaluation procedures to accurately identify communication needs and determine appropriate intervention strategies.
• Identifying and implementing specialized speech-language pathology interventions while providing guidance to interdisciplinary team members regarding communication strategies that can be appropriately incorporated into their respective services.
• Selecting and adapting appropriate activities and evidence-based intervention approaches to address IFSP outcomes, while evaluating the effectiveness of strategies and modifying interventions based on each child's progress and family outcomes.
• Making recommendations regarding ongoing speech-language pathology services in collaboration with families, service coordinators, and interdisciplinary team members based on family concerns, identified outcomes, and the child's participation in daily routines.
• Completing timely and accurate documentation, including evaluations, session notes, progress reports, IFSP documentation, billing records, and other required clinical documentation in accordance with Children's Specialized Hospital and New Jersey Early Intervention Program requirements.
• Maintaining ongoing communication with families, supervisors, and team members through email, telephone, text, and other communication platforms.
• Participating in continuing education, mandatory training, staff meetings, conference calls, and professional development opportunities while maintaining clinical competencies and incorporating current evidence-based practices.
• Assisting in the education and mentoring of colleagues, graduate students, and interdisciplinary team members regarding Early Intervention philosophy, communication development, and evidence-based pediatric intervention practices.
• Seeking clinical supervision and consultation as needed, actively participating in performance evaluations, and utilizing feedback to support continued professional growth and clinical excellence.
• Meeting productivity expectations while delivering exceptional, family-centered care with professionalism, compassion, and clinical excellence.
• Traveling throughout assigned service areas to provide therapy services within homes, childcare centers, and other natural environments.
