Seeking to make a meaningful impact on the recovery and safety of medical patients? At RWJBarnabas Health, our multidisciplinary patient care teams work collaboratively to provide high-quality, compassionate care to individuals facing diverse medical challenges. As a Phlebotomist, work is performed within our laboratory team, serving as a vital clinical professional and supportive liaison for patients requiring laboratory services. Phlebotomists are a critical component of the care plan, redefining the patient experience through vigilance, precision, and excellence. This is an opportunity to join a dedicated team focused on maintaining a secure and therapeutic healing environment.
A typical day for a Phlebotomist may include:
- Procures venous and capillary blood specimens on all patients regardless of age on a routine, timed, and stat basis within departmental timelines.
- Maintains 100 percent compliance with positive patient identification protocols, from bedside verification and order matching to specimen label printing, bedside labeling, transport, and LIS receipt.
- Achieves departmental performance standards, maintaining a phlebotomy success rate greater than 90 percent and an expected collection rate of 8 to 10 patients per hour.
- Ensures high responsiveness by meeting collection windows: stat draws within 30 minutes, timed draws within 30 minutes of the target, and routine draws within 60 minutes.
- Verifies orders from scripts and accurately inputs patient, test order, and physician data into the HIS and LIS to expedite testing and minimize order entry errors.
- Prepares and transports specimens securely, ensuring all drawn samples are returned to the laboratory via the pneumatic tube system within 10 minutes of collection.
- Utilizes clinical downtime efficiently for phlebotomy tray decontamination, specimen centrifugation, department deliveries, culture plating, and blood culture set-ups.
- Applies the knowledge and skills necessary to assess data reflective of each patient's status and provides age-appropriate care across infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
- Promotes a proactive, teamwork-driven environment across shifts, train and maintain competency as a hazardous materials packager, and perform other duties or mentor students and new employees as required.
This role might be for you if:
- There is a passion for providing a safe, compassionate, and welcoming healthcare experience for patients while providing a supportive environment with prompt and consistent service.
- Observation and clinical skills are exceptional, and you continuously demonstrate a patient-focused work attitude that drives patient satisfaction scores into the 90th percentile.
- A high bar is set regarding patient rights, strict confidentiality of all communications and records, and a total commitment to our Safety Together principles.
- You easily refer to questionable issues or conflicts to the laboratory supervisor, Charge Nurse, or a designee for quick and safe resolution.
- Communication is effective with multidisciplinary teams, listening and communicating effectively to demonstrate professionalism with families, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and supervisors.
- You support teamwork by cooperative problem-solving through participation in meetings or projects, and utilize principles of continuous quality improvement to assess, measure, and improve department functions.
- You can organize work and set priorities with a minimum of supervision, make timely decisions consistent with objectives, demonstrate sound judgment, and benefit from constructive criticism.
