Assistant Vice President, Internal Audit

The Assistant Vice President of Internal Audit provides strategic leadership, vision, and operational oversight across the organization's entire internal audit function. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and executing the Annual Audit Plan, guiding enterprise risk assessment activities, and driving governance support initiatives. A core focus of the position is building and nurturing collaborative, trust-based partnerships with executive leadership and cross-functional teams across RWJBarnabas Health, including Compliance, Legal Affairs, Finance, and Information Technology. You will lead complex audits, high-profile investigations, and strategic advisory engagements to identify emerging risks, strengthen internal controls, and protect organizational integrity. As an empowering leader, you will mentor and guide audit management and staff while exercising sound independent judgment to solve complex operational challenges. Ultimately, you will serve as a key resource and clear communicator, delivering actionable insights, significant audit findings, and progress on corrective actions to senior leadership and the Audit Committee.

As an Assistant Vice President of Internal Audit, a typical day might include the following:

  • Morning Strategy & Executive Alignment: Start the day connecting with executive leadership, operational leaders, or co-sourcing partners to act as a trusted advisor on governance, emerging enterprise risks, and evolving healthcare regulations.
  • Audit Plan & Project Oversight: Review and approve audit scopes, risk assessments, and draft reports across financial, operational, IT, cybersecurity, and compliance engagements to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Meet with audit directors and managers to provide guidance on complex or sensitive investigations, review audit workpapers, manage resource allocations, and support team talent development.
  • Risk & Remediation Monitoring: Evaluate progress on corrective action plans from previous audit findings and analyze key departmental performance metrics to track overall risk mitigation.
  • Committee Preparation & Strategic Planning: Dedicate time to preparing high-level presentations and audit updates for the Audit Committee and Executive Leadership, or work on continuous improvement initiatives like integrating new data analytics into audit processes.

This role might be a fit for you if:

  • You excel at presenting complex risk metrics clearly to Boards, Audit Committees, and C-suite executives, and you know how to influence high-level decision-making without relying on direct authority.
  • You bring deep, hands-on knowledge of healthcare operations, regulatory mandates, and reimbursement models, enabling you to anticipate sector-specific challenges with confidence.
  • You have a strong track record of leading enterprise risk assessments and building comprehensive audit strategies spanning financial, operational, IT, cybersecurity, and compliance domains.
  • You thrive on mentoring audit directors, managers, and staff while balancing departmental budgets, resource allocation, and external co-sourcing partnerships.
  • You exercise sound judgment when navigating sensitive investigations, complex consulting projects, and ambiguous business environments.
  • You actively drive continuous improvement by incorporating data analytics, automation, and modern auditing technologies into everyday workflows.
  • You view internal audit not just as a compliance function, but as an advisory service that strengthens governance and operational resilience across the organization.

To be considered for this opportunity, you should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline, ideally complemented by a relevant professional certification such as a CPA, CIA, CISA, or CFE. Candidates must bring at least ten years of progressively responsible experience across internal audit, public accounting, healthcare operations, compliance, or risk management, including a minimum of five years in a leadership capacity managing professional audit teams. Preference will be given to candidates with Big Four public accounting experience, specialized healthcare industry audit expertise, and a proven track record of conducting enterprise-wide risk assessments, directing strategic audit planning, and presenting directly to senior executive leadership, governing boards, and audit committees.
